Negative approach killing Sri Lankan Cricket

Sri Lankan Cricket never got better after their heartbreaking loss in the 2011 Cricket World Cup final in Mumbai. Continues series losses against England, Australia, without even a one series victory seems to drag SLC to hell. The one main aspect towards their horrible loss of match winning ability is that the team always played in a negative approach.More than anything batting has been a major letdown & the bowling and fielding aspect are resonable but not exciting.

The Sri Lankan team long renowned to play challenging yet very exciting cricket, at present looks under cooked, fragile, childish and raw similar to Bangladesh & Zimbabwe. The team looks to lack energy, fire, unity, hunger, consistent performance & very sadly their match winning ability.

Sri Lankan Cricketers seems to fall for ‘few great players exit from the team & we are to weep’, which starts their negative approach in the team. Yes, Murali, Vaas & Jayasuriya were irreplaceable players but saying that you need to move on to better cricketers that you got.

Dilshan on the other hand seems to be more of stressful cricketer than a captain for Sri Lanka as his own batting performance questions his existence in the team itself, Metaphorically speaking TM Dilshan will never be a good captain as now he seems to grow into the job filled with losses behind him and that will freak him out soon to either quit his job or to be dumped out of the team.

Mahela Jayawardene an iconic cricketer in the SLC team has clearly lost his good run of form against Pakistan on his quest to complete 10000 runs, not even managing to pass 40 runs even in one innings in the 3 test series. However Mahela is good enough cricketer to learn from his mistakes and strategize a way to find form hopefully in the ODIs.

Kumar Sangakkara one of the best left hand batsmen in the world today completed 516 runs in the 3 test series against Pakistan. Sanga also has been having an up & down time after the CWC 2011, but as they say “form is temporary class is permanent”.  Sanga manages to rescue his image as a legendary cricketer.

Angelo Mathews also was having a good run with the bat seems to forgotten his pace days and sadly turning in to an only batsman. 2 years ago I remember against India he took 6 wickets in the Compaq Cup when the commentator asked Angelo when he received the Man of the Match award “ are u a batting all-rounder or  a balling all-rounder’’ , Angelo replied “I am genuine all-rounder who is capable to do both batting & bowling equally”. It is sad that his quadriceps injury has pulled him away from bowling.

However SLC should find a way to get winning results or they may well be soon at a position where West Indies, Bangladesh & Zimbabwe are occupying currently in ICC rankings. Sri Lanka needs to work all round mostly their batting where they have been woeful.

Everyone becomes negative when you lose match after match. Batting has been horrible. Only the batsmen are to blame here.

@ROAR OF r right on the money about the situation of SL cricket's so pathetic when the team is concerned..clearly dilshan is not a leadership material,no offence..if selectors are not going to lift captancy burden from him within next couple of month it will most certainly kill further his approach and performance...and within the team there is serious lack of intent and hunger to win...seems SL cricket slowly but surly towords sad.!

Yet another series defeat. Next we will get hammered by South Africans. It's time to drop Mahela. Sri Lanken cricket is not his private property. This is my test team for South African tour.

1.Upul Tharanga.
3.Kumar Sangakkara(Captain)
4.Angelo Mathews(V. Captain)
5.Dinesh Chandimal
6.Prasanna Jajawardena.(W.K)
7.Thisara Perera.
8.Suraj Radiv
9.Lasith Malinga.
10.Chanaka Welagedara.
11.Ajantha Mendis/Lakmal/Eranga.

It's time to be humble and give captainship back to Sangakkara at teast for the Tests.Malinga too, understand that country is more impotant.

After Dilshan took over the captaincy, all the series have been lost except for a t20. Dilshan had been a good batsman for SL but, I don't see him as a good captain. Players lack motivation and team integrity seems to be very dull during the past few series. I hope the management would take required action soon rather than delaying and letting down the momentum of Sri Lanka Cricket. I would suggest if Angelo Mathews could take over the leadership, a new era of SL cricket could be seen with a new bunch of young heroes.

Yes! yes!! yes!!! What is it with this totally negative approach to batting? I dont get it and it will never lead to winning a game. Too many times the SL batters get stuck, build pressure and self destruct with nothing for the bowlers to bowl at. Even in the last test when a rare opportunity to put pressure on Pakistan came about, we didnt show any inclination to take the advantage.

Dilshan's captaincy experiment I am afraid should be over. It was a gamble and safe to say it hasnt worked. The guy doesnt know what he is doing and missing basic tricks which the team cannot afford. Not sure if this means giving it to Mathews but I have seen enough to concluded Dilshan is not the man.

Give it back to Sanga - he offered to captain the test side after all.

agree with all the above... give capytaincy back to sanga... give dilshan a break.... cricket is a passion in sl... the only thing that kept us going when the country was war torn and beaten.... its too precious to watch die....please someone put things right.... remove dilshan!!

Dilshan is not technically feasible as a captain. He had not been either attacking or aggressive in the field. He has no idea about field placing and easily giving runs to the opponents.I think he should work hard on his batting also. There are no experienced players to give captaincy instead of Dilshan. So he should brush up these things before he go to the next tour.
