Sri Lanka Cricket can't afford a decent coach

Why is it that Tom Moody, who coached Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final in Barbados, can’t find another Test nation that wants him as coach? How about Dav Whatmore, for that matter? He was only sought after by Bangladesh, despite a World Cup victory under his belt.

I don’t mean to put any of these blokes down, but I have always been of the view that Sri Lanka has a tendency to pick up an affordable coach, who is not really sought after by anyone else but us, and the success of that coach has been primarily due to the skill and ability of the lads in the middle.

So, if an affordable coach can produce these results, what kind of results can a top coach, beyond what Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials claim they can afford, produce?

An unnamed SLC official told The Island recently that SLC could not afford John Buchanan.

"Buchanan is the high profile name on that list. Generally an international coach is paid around 15,000 US$ a month. But with Buchanan you are talking of at least 35,000 US$ a month. That’s way beyond what we can afford," the source told The Island.

Here is a cricket board that has made sums of over $35 million US dollars from a single tour in the past, now saying it can’t afford to pay $420,000/year for a coach!

On most occasions, TV rights for an ODI series can cover what Buchanan costs for a whole year, but SLC cannot afford him? What a farce!

I believe firmly that Buchanan can transform this highly skilled and disciplined Sri Lankan unit into world champions come 2015. Buchanan knows Australian conditions, where the next World Cup will be held, better than most and he is Australia's most successful coach.

Not being able to replace the mediocre Trevor Bayliss with a highly sought after and skilled coach portrays the steady demise of our cricket, under the hands of this government appointed administration. The lavish spending and the frequent overseas travel of some SLC officials has denied our cricketers the best in the business. You have a right to be outraged!

Tom Moody has backed out. I know the reason. He had a good rapport with Mahela and Kumar and as long as they were there, he felt there will be less politics. Now there will be more politics and coaches will understand with politics taking the stage, there tenure is risky, Thank god wew did not win WC, President wud have taken all credit.

This article written by a person called Ryan is factually incorrect. SLC never earned $35 million from a single tour in the past.So can this Ryan tell which tour it was?

Hilal should take necessary steps to avoid such mediocre articles and blogposts appearing on

Ramesh if my blog post is mediocre to you because of a typo ($3-$5 million instead of $35 million), then there is something seriously wrong with you. Even if they made $3 million from just ONE series, they should be able to afford a coach that costs $420,000/year. A good coach is more important than paying Dandeniya and his uncle their wages.

Currently Sri Lanka pays less than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe does for their coaches I am told, so there!

I think we want the best one in the business! If Buchanan is the best, 420,000%$ is dosen`t matter. Also if we want to win the title in 2015, we want to be ready as can as soon! So don`t think about money guys!

Its real funny you should say so... I'm not sure if you know, but Tom Moody was in the final shortlist to be coach of the Indian team...he only got pipped by the high profile Australian Greg Chappell...with disastrous results...its no surprise then that we in India kept wondering how different things would have been if Tom Moody were the for no one wanting Dav Whatmore...dude...the man was the go to guy at our National Cricket Academy...where he implemented looked over our advanced level coaching program...which incidentally the thieves at the BCCI are very proud of...he's also overseen Kolkata Knight Riders' best season in the IPL so far...a number three finish...prior to which they consistently topped the charts...from the bottom.

And talking about the KKR topping from the bottom...its worth mentioning who was at the helm of affairs back was none other than the master strategist...the amazing(and amazingly expensive) Australian...John Buchanan!!

As for his success with the Aussie side...don't you think the side he coached was incredibly talanted...just like the present Lankan side...and his success rate would differ with a lesser team...besides Shane Warnes called him completely useless more than just once...and he's been Accused of RACIAL DISCRIMINATION while at you really want such a man to take charge of 11 of the finest men playing cricket currently...think about it...irrespective of your political affiliation.
Cheers from Delhi!!
