For me a good captain is one that can build up a struggling team and instill confidence and winning habits in them.
That's why I rate the likes of Clive Lloyd, Allan Border, Sourav Ganguly quite highly.
Of course they don't do it all themselves, its a collective effort from team including management/coaches etc.

By contrast Steve Waugh, Ponting, Dhoni, even Viv basically had ready made teams full of stars. There stats as captain look great! But prob a number of their teammates could have captained the same side and achieved the same results.

Arjuna falls into 1st category. I disagree with this anonymous person that he was overrated. The 2 extra points in WC meant SL qualified for Quater finals not won WC so thats nonsense!

Arjuna led way with streetfighter instincts something many SL lacked at the time, both with bat and in field. With another leader the team would have politely folded and never taken it up to the bigger teams, and Murali wouldn't have ever played again. Is that inspiring enough for you?

I think he was better tactically than Aravinda, Hashan and Dilshan. Whilst Sanath's sucess had a lot to do with Murali at his peak!
