Post videos and pictures of the Sri Lankan Leopard in this thread.

Sri Lanka Leopard

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sri Lanka leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), colloquially known as Kotiya, is a subspecies of leopard native to Sri Lanka. However, "kotiyā" is now the colloquial Sinhala name for the tiger and "diviyā" is used for the leopard. See below for more information.

A recent study has shown that Yala National Park has one of the highest recorded densities of leopards in the world, although this animal is still considered to be endangered. The Wilpattu National Park in Sri Lanka is also known as a good place to watch leopards. Leopards tend to be more readily observed in parts of Sri Lanka than in other countries where they share their habitat with more dominant competitors, such as lions or tigers.

Aww! Great post guys! This is

Aww! Great post guys! This is one magnificent beast. I worry about the damage 24 years of war has done to our wild life.

I have never been lucky enough to see the Leopard in the wild in Sri Lanka. At one point they were pretty scarce.

In Sri Lanka I was once offered leopard fur for Rs. 3000 that's less than $30 for the loss of a leopard. Such a shame! I gave the guy selling the fur a piece of my mind.

Black Leopard species found in Sri Lanka

The Daily Mirror reports the species as 'Black Tiger' however there are no Tigers in Sri Lanka. Just Leopards. This rare animals carcass was found trapped in a poacher’s snare.

So sad when you see the above. Such a rare beast. Look at the size of that! In the past there have been reports of people seeing this animal. I doubt even 5 of them exist. With 24 years fo war and shelling and mines. Many more unknown species are being wiped out.

the black leopard

I'm loving this post guys! Thanks. Some good pics to go with those videos too.

You're right Hilal - the black cat seen above is not a black tiger as the daily mirror claims. It is known as a 'melanistic leopard'. Simply means black leopard. There are also well documented cases of currently living melanistic jaguars as melanistic leopards. Together, the melanistic variants of the leopard and jaguar are also commonly known as 'black panthers'.

You're welcome Hilal. It's so

You're welcome Hilal. It's so sad to see a magnificent (or any animal) killed by poachers like this. Hope these practices are completely eradicated sooner rather than later.
