April 18, 2011 (Island Cricket): Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced earlier today that Tillakaratne Dilshan has been named captain of Sri Lanka. The 34-year-old will captain Sri Lanka in all three formats of the game.

“We are proud to announce the appointment of Dilshan as the national captain in all three formats of the game for the tour of England,” SLC said in a statement.

“The national selectors have postponed the appointment of a vice-captain since the prospective candidates are nursing injuries and their availability for the forthcoming tour is still in question.”

Sri Lanka opted for former skipper Mahela Jayawardene over Dilshan for the vice-captaincy role during the recently concluded World Cup and on previous tours, but have now turned to the all-rounder to lead Sri Lanka.

The World Cup final loss to India earlier this month saw both Sangakkara and Jayawardene, along with the selection panel headed by Aravinda de Silva, unexpectedly stepping down from their positions, leaving the side without a captain, vice-captain or selectors ahead of their tour to England.

Sangakkara not retained

Sangakkara, however, offered to stay on as Test captain until a replacement was groomed, but SLC has chosen to replace the former captain entirely.

“I have offered to continue as the Test captain for the forthcoming series with England and possibly Australia if the selectors believe this would help the new captain and aid the transition,” Sangakkara told reporters on April 5, when announcing his decision to step down.

Dilshan’s appointment is seen as a temporary solution, as he is not expected to feature in the 2015 World Cup, by which time he will be 38.

Angelo Mathews, 23, is likely to be Sri Lanka’s long-term choice for captain, but an injury he picked up during the World Cup has ruled the all-rounder out of cricket for eight weeks, forcing SLC to delay naming him as the vice-captain for Sri Lanka’s tour to England.

The first Test between England and Sri Lanka will take place from May 26-30 in Cardiff.

This is ok if we are not touring Zimbabwe. I heard he cant enter Zimbabwe again? Is that true? How about that one? Sri Lankan captain can't travel to a certain country because of his bad behaviour there?? Great captain then no? I hope its not true!

This is the end of Sri Lanka Cricket. We can finally say we have hit rock bottom. We have the most corrupt board who failed to even deliver world cup stadiums on time, left us in millions in debt and now kicked Sanga out!

SLc chairman DS de Silva is President Rajapakse's wife's cousin. Thank you for everything you have done Mr. President! You defeat terrorism but thats all you did, everything else he destroyed.

since u mentioned "You defeat terrorism but thats all you did.." so u mean he defeated terrorism all by himself yeah? that is, he put up all the war strategies, commanded and controlled the ground operations, etc? haha ur statement is constantly being preached over and over again by state media who are the biggest image builders for MR himself.

one thing all the Sri Lankans and non Sri Lankans should know is, MR didn't defeat terrorism all by himself. It was the soldiers who did the hardest part, who are now being illtreated! the commander who led the army (the ground battalions, which directed both the navy and airforce) is in jail, that is for winning the war for MR and his goons i guess. And what MR and his henchmen did all by themselves, with much interest was building their status on the war victory, and they are still doing that.

This is not a surprise, Because all this is Sri Lanka! these "maroons" ruined our country, now cricket, the only identification that Sri Lanka had for many years. How can the BCSL appoint such a caracter as captain? very unprofesional. We miss the great Captains like Mahela and Sanga . They are realy gentlemans in the game, welldone both you guys and thank you for your great service as captains for the country. Now we need some gentleman as our captain, yes it's only Mathews who can take the ship to a destination. Politics please take your dirty hands from cricket.

Big mistake! This guy converted from his religion of birth and changed his name given from birth. Then divorced his first wife who he has a child with and less than a month remarried! What a character to make captain???
