Disharmony in the Sri Lankan cricket team?

An interview with Sri Lanka’s most successful batsman in the Test series in South Africa has revealed that talk of disharmony within the team and coaches not fulfilling their roles is bunkum.

Thilan SamaraweeraSamaraweera told the Sri Lankan newspaper The Nation of the help he received from the coaching staff on tour and how the advice helped him score two centuries against the Proteas.

The 35-year-old right-hander finished the Test series as the second highest run scorer (339 runs), only next to South African AB de Villiers (353 runs). He was the only batsman to score two centuries in the series.

“When I arrived in South Africa, the Sri Lanka dressing room atmosphere was fantastic,” Samaraweera said. “Coach Geoff Marsh, the team management and the players said that I deserved to stay in the dressing room. That kind of welcome helped me a lot and cleared my mind.”

After axing him from the Test side and initially leaving him out of the squad for the tour of South Africa, the selectors had a change of heart and recalled the prolific run-maker back to the Sri Lankan Test side.

“On one of those days, where play was washed out by rain, [Marsh] told me that Jesse Ryder had got 175 against Australia A in a side game but he didn’t get many runs in the Test matches,” Samaraweera said. “He said, when you go to the Test match and if you hit a four that’s the confidence you will get. He knew that I had a doubt in my mind because of the lack of cricket.”

A discussion with batting coach Marvan Atapattu, which Samaraweera said helped him adjust to the conditions in South Africa, led to a change in his technique.

“I spoke to [Atapattu] and I made a slight change to my batting. My initial movement was going across the stumps but I changed it to going back to give me more time to see the ball and any late movement.

“I practiced that adjustment at high intensity in the nets. Luckily, my footwork was fine. I do a lot of skipping and after the Australian series I wanted to prove myself again and worked hard at my game. I think I have another two-and-a-half years of cricket ahead of me.”

We know team is fine and coaches are doing fine. It is sports minister and our government including the chief selector and secretary Nishantha Ranatunga that is the reason for all our failures!

First thing captain should be changed. Including the vice captain. They are not qualified as leaders. If Angakkara & Mahela are in the team non of the other can lead the team. Give back the captain ship to Mahela or Sanga. The other thing is, big headed Colombo people think that they are the only people who can play & lead the team. Dilshan was the second captain out of Colombo or Kandy. Jayauriya was successful as a captain so they couldn't say or do anything. But end of his career we all know what happened. Give the captain hip to Mahela & coach the next captain under him, like what Sangakkara did. But Mathews doesn't seem to be a good decision maker. We saw that in the second one day international with the Protiers. Where Nuwan Kulasekara came to the wicket before Mathews to accelerate the innings, but later Mathews came to the wicket & played like a test match. There were plenty of instances where he made bad options.
End of the day our cricket is in deep hell for a long period.

Guys, I think the problems with our Sri Lankan cricket team is quite simple & very well known to the general public. We have a leader who cannot command respect. I think the minister & the political clowns must understand that (unlike in politics in SL where thuggery is used) demanding respect will not work.

We need to take a very critical view of our selectors- why is Duleep still hanging around? He has done more or less every job in the board.

So thank you Mr Mendis why don't you just leave so that others can replace you! Also someone needs to tell the Minister of Sports to talk only when necessary- a great example of a Bull in a China shop!

I think we should have included him to ODI also as we can see the middle order is not doing what they are up to. and better give mathews a punishment to keep him away from some matches, as he even not fit to ball or not in a form to ball 10 overs too, why we are wasting our talents while lots of players in the queue, and give them a chance.

No dought captain should be changed. But who should be the captain? Should he be Mahela? Answer is never.

Mahela is the worse out of form batsman after Dilshan and both of them should be sacked without further delay.Mahela is not only out of form but he is incapable against good attacks. So there is no hope.
Then only one suitable left is Sanga.Selectors must be humble and appoint Sanga again to stop this disaster. This sport is much loved by people so do not make mokery of it.

Sanga is the only option till mathews or any new captain is ready to undertake the job, otherwise if the reborn Arjuna Ranathunga comes even will not able to lift the cricket in Srilanka.
