Sri Lanka's Herath becomes highest-ranked spinner in the world

By Staff Writers | November 30, 2012

PhotoRangana Herath has become the highest-ranked spinner in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, following the conclusion of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Colombo this week.

Herath's figures of 6/103 and 3/67 at the P.Sara Oval saw the left-arm spinner rewarded with a jump of two places, and has put him in second position ahead of Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and South African fast bowler Vernon Philander.

Herath took 20 wickets in the series, which earned him the player of the series award. It also earned him 56 ratings points in two Tests, and puts him 20 ratings points behind table-topper Dale Steyn of South Africa and six ratings points ahead of Saeed and Philander, who now share third position.

The only Sri Lanka batsman to move in the right direction in the table is Angelo Mathews, who moved up two places and is now in 26th position.

The news for Sri Lanka’s top batsmen is not particularly positive.

Kumar Sangakkara, after losing his number-one spot to Australian captain Michael Clarke earlier this week, has slipped further after his double failure in Colombo. The left-hander scored 0 and 16 and has dropped two places to fourth position.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene has slipped three places to 17th spot.

Meanwhile, Tillekeratne Dilshan has slid four places to 30th position.

Opener Tharanga Paranavitana has fallen three places to 46th.

In the Reliance ICC Test Championship table, Sri Lanka and New Zealand have retained their pre-series positions, but Sri Lanka has dropped two ratings points while New Zealand has gained three ratings points.

Thatz nice congradz hearth.
well i don't think any one will give him credit if he became no1 in the world in this NZ tour(home), but isn't this situation is soo nice, if you wonna be no.1 you have a perfect place " Australia (away)" to become No1 if you can't you don't deserve that rank , fitting situation for hearth , wishing him all the very best.

true dat, @sdf no one will give him credit even if he becomes NO.1. Rather they will harp abt wat amaizing bowlers Swann,Panesar,Broad,Philander,Lyon,Ashwin are. Same treatment was given to Kulasekara when he was the NO.1 ODI bowler.

Anyways congratz to Herath aka Toga :D)

@ UP7 : I have to agree with you, as i always like kula's bowling and to surprise he was under the shadow when he was no1. Even in CSK Dhoni hardly used him, may not more than 5 matches all IPL seasons. To the surprise he was retained this year.
