Match referee Srinath's call robs Sri Lanka of series win in Australia

By PTI | January 21, 2013

PhotoMiffed at Indian match referee Javagal Srinath's decision to call off the fourth ODI against Australia due to a wet outfield, Sri Lanka on Sunday said that they would ask the ICC about "inconsistencies" in rulings regarding rain-affected matches.

Rain halted play in the fourth over of the Sri Lankan run-chase after Mahela Jayawardene's side had scored 14 for no loss, needing 209 more runs off 46.4 overs, with all their wickets intact.

The match was later called off, and Srinath explained that play did not resume because he and  umpires Paul Reiffel and Marais Erasmus felt conditions were "unfair".

Srinath's call robbed Sri Lanka of an ideal chance to finish off the five-match series, having already taken a 2-1 lead, and Jayawardene expressed frustration that a ground as rich in history and facilities as the SCG could not get the game restarted.

Jayawardene said that matches have been played in far worse conditions, and cited as an example his side's ODI against New Zealand in Pallekele only three months ago.

"We played New Zealand three months ago, and the interpretation we got in that series was quite different to what we got today," Jayawardene said.

"We played in Pallekele with a lot of rain, and during the World Cup as well.

"I think we need to find a bit more consistency. That's something we'll probably write and put across to them [ICC] and see how we can go about it."

"At the SCG, I would assume that a ground of this magnitude you should be able to get a game in," he added.

"Maybe they should do what we do back home and cover the entire ground.

"I think we can write to the match referee because the interpretation we got three months ago in the New Zealand series was something totally different. It was deemed that we'd only stop play if it was dangerous, not unfair, but today the interpretation was different.

"I accept that, it comes from the match referee and the umpires, so I'm happy to take that on board, but it was two interpretations we got within a three-month period."

Australian captain Michael Clarke also expressed surprise at the game not resuming, saying that he had seen matches played at the SCG where far more rain had drenched the ground.

"I think this ground is known for its drainage. I've played a number of games here, where it's held a lot more water than that, and we've managed to get back on and play games of cricket," Clarke said.

"I think the hardest thing was the water didn't really sink in — it sat on top, there was no sun around and no wind.

"Sri Lanka would've loved to get back on there, as the game got shorter. It was probably going to suit them a lot more. But we certainly wanted to play as well to give ourselves a chance to win the series.

"Unfortunately, we can't win the series now, we can only level it."

According to SCG curator Tom Parker, the unusual problem was that the rain was so light that it sat on top of the grass like heavy dew, and did not sink into the soil.

"There was no wind or sun to dry the surface, despite ground staff using wide ranging measures to dry the grass," Parker said.

"The high humidity also continued to produce heavy dew."

The fifth and final ODI takes place on January 23 in Hobart.

I seriously doubt about SL run chase. I think Aussies would have won if the match would have progressed.

if the match resumed, SL wud have been chasing something similar to 140 in 35 overs!!(or even less, Aus were 7/160 at 35 over mark) NOT 223 in 50 overs!!!!! yes SL wud've lost 4/5 wickets when chasing 140 but still wud ve won. wet ball, wet outfield, and tails firmly between the legs for kangaroos :D)

chasing 223 would hav been a bit dodgy bt after the rain with d reduced score and a wet ball and all wickets in hand, it was SL s game! i was bemused to hear the match was called off. even though im an AUS fan this just didnt sound right. i can remember a certain world cup final which SL batted in virtual darkness. surely that couldnt hav been fair play right?

Don't we all know the term "Love Thy Neighbour" ..Well we Srilankans know how much INDIANS love us. People who followed Srilankan cricket will know what happened when we beat INDIA in 1996(Don't we all know what Mr Farook Engineer said Post Match????)Or Remember Bottle Souvenirs our players received from Indian Fans??

Does anyone remember what the Ex Indian Player/Commentator said when this Guy(Srinatha)hit Murali's while Batting?? And soon after 1996 world cup, when asked about what was the best score to defend (Post match)..the so called God said" 1000 runs" as a tongue in cheek comment after being belted in a One Dayer played in Srilanka. And more recently ..Thanks to an Expert called Jadeja who knows a thing or two on Srilankan Domestic Cricket...Said we don't have Talented Youngsters like India??

Please remember... this guy was on the receiving end of Kalu and Sanath on his Illustrious bowling Career being belted around the Park..this is his way of pay back...But guys Could you imagine if the Boot was on the Other Foot??? Oh no...
ALL HELL WOULD HAVE BROKEN LOOSE...there will be an effigy of the MATCH REFEREE burnt in all Indian States calling for his removal!!!

But what we do??? If Srilankan Board is serious about this...They should take it to ICC and ensure this Guy is removed from the Panel!!!!!! Do you think it will happen??

PIPE DREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indian Umpire Venkat called off the Eng-SL test match for bad light when we needed 1 wicket to win and win the series. He kept on checking his light meter obesssively and somehow practically dragged a very reluctant visiting umpiring partner out of the field - when the spinners were bowling...england saved the match.

the same levels of light existed in the days before and play was not affected..

Arjuna mentioned that before winning the World cup, they went on a tour to Inadia and found rat droppings in the meals of the players...

They treat us like their own low caste people. Our diplomats and leaders are treated like s***t by them and they claim the right to send 5000 fishing boats every night to Sri Lankan waters to fish.

The indians do not like us winning anything -apart from against Pakistan- because they hate pakistan...

These are consequences of living next to an uncivilised, unrefined bully....

funny Sakthivel lankey felow.....yes Aussies will win if they playing with india this is not india, this is srilanka,,used u r brain badi.after the rain match should be playing under the D/L.THEN THEY WILL BE REDUCE TARGET FOR 20OVERS,ASSUES SCORE 222 IN 50OVERS 4.44 runs per over,,THEN IF THEY PLAY 20 OVERS THEN TARGET WILL BE NOT EVEN 100RUNS FOR 20OVERS.WE R NOW T20 TOP we can won the game in 10overs.....this blame should gos to ground manager.not to srinath,,he did r8 thing if the ground is not good and safe to play.then they cant play.i think ground manager should cover the entire ground not only pitch,if srilankans can cover entire ground then why Aussies didn't did....this is call poor management or what?think sakthivel if this happen to india they will cover the all ground and after 2hours also they can play the match.if not they will throw glass.bottles, all s**t, or burn Aussies players houses .....Sakthivel
