Sport minister confirms split captaincy on the cards for Sri Lanka

Kandamby will not be Test captain, says minister
By Dinouk Colombage | January 22, 2013

PhotoSri Lanka will undergo major changes following their tour of Australia, according to sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Speaking to Island Cricket, Aluthgamage explained that at the end of the week he would be appointing a new selection committee. He refused to name who would make up the new selection panel.

The minister also confirmed rumours that there would be multiple captains for the national side.

"There will be a captain for the T20 and one-day side, and a separate captain for the Test side," he explained.

He however dismissed suggestions that Thilina Kandamby would be appointed Test captain.

"I have seen this story and can assure you it is entirely false," he said.

The minister would not confirm who the new captains would be.

Sri Lanka take on Australia in the final match of the five-match ODI series in Hobart tomorrow. The visitors currently lead the series 2-1, and will be looking to thank Mahela Jayawardene for his time as captain with a series win.

Good idea... But problerm is who is the next captain.... Other side sri lanka needs to play extra 3,4 test matches..... Normaly sri lanka play 8or9 test matches per year..... Extra 3or4 test matches i think that are help for future & younger guys.... Most important thing is sri lanka lost few test matches due to ipl and others... Plz don't miss test matches.... Test is the real cricket

I don't have any complain about Sport Minister's thinking. but He is pointless in current situation now.

Let's explain. For test, Dilshan, Sangakkara, Mahela won't be captain. Dilshan and Samaraweera are retiring. So, Position left for Mathews, as he is the permanent player in the side.

For ODI or T20, situation is same. so, odi& t20 captain will be except Mathews????

Samaraweera though he said he is retiring, may be made Tset captain. He is trying all tricks. He has now started ODI and was last minute addition to Provincial tourney. He is also bowling much more. He let the side down in all 3 tests by trying to hit ball out of ground in last test when safety was paramount.
In World Cup, he was inteam undeservedly.

Interesting to see who will be taking up as the captain of the Test side. Hoping for the best and able candidate to take up this difficult position.

For ODI's and T20's its definitely going to be Mathews. For Tests they might ask Sanga to lead again, or Kulasekara/Herath.

Only these seem the possible option and I agree with not having Mathews as the Test captain, he hasnt done enough to justify a permanent place in the team. And of all the seniors, I see only Sanga holding his place in the Test team for long.

Makes sense. For the love of God, lets not get Kandambi back in. Mathews as our ODI and T20 captain. And I like to see the remaining seniors to take on the mantle of Test Captain, sure not Dilshan, Samaraweera, Sanga or Mahela, but Herath seems to have a good head on his shoulder and leading a fresh test side might look bright. Or even take the risk of giving it to Thirimanne, who is yet to prove his place, but would be beneficial in the long run.

Ok friends, Do Sri Lanka need any cricket selectors if Mahindananda Aluthgamage can talk about the captaincy and the team composition...He can be the selector himself...It seems it's happening that way...By the way Honourable Sanath Jayasuriya is tipped to be the chief selector...

If Sanath is chief selector, it is end of SL cricket and for me it will be end of a chapter.Sanath has aleady caused havoc behind the scenes and taking revenge from Mahela and Kumar. He is a laughing stock among expatiates.

Angi should be there for all three formats of the game..but if someone want a good captain after him it should be idle to split the vice captaincy between Thirimanne & Chandimal...and also better ask Dilshan,Samaraweera and Prasanna to leave...and make sure a good bowling unit should be performed also make sense to get the Chandika Hathurusinghe's service to the national team....its if we SLC can appoint Aravinda De Silva as batting consultant
