Will Sri Lanka qualify for the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

After the crushing defeat in the first ODI against Bangladesh in Dambulla, Sri Lankan fans will be nervous about their team's chances of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup.

The hosts of the next ODI World Cup England and the other seven top-ranked teams in the ODI rankings, by the cut-off date of September 30, 2017, will qualify.

The remaining four teams will feature in a World Cup qualifying tournament next year for another chance.

Before the start of the three-match series, Sri Lanka were ranked sixth (98 points), while Bangladesh were on 91 points and ranked seventh.

In the event that Bangladesh whitewash the hosts, they will join Sri Lanka on 96 points and be ranked sixth when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point.

If Bangladesh win 2-1 however, they will end with 93 points and Sri Lanka will lose a point (97), and if Sri Lanka win 2-1 they will move to 99 points and Bangladesh will remain on 91.

The rankings will be impacted by other series taking place — Pakistan and West Indies, who also are in danger of not making it, will play a three-match ODI series in April. The outcome of those matches too can dent Sri Lanka's chances of qualifying.

The possibility of Sri Lanka failing to qualify for the World Cup has not gone unnoticed in the local media, with The Island newspaper publishing the headline 'D-Day for Sri Lankan Cricket' this week as a preview to the ODI series against Bangladesh.

"Imagine the national cricket team being kicked out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019," the editorial read. "That's quite impossible you would think for a nation that has won cricket's most prestigious event once and has reached the finals on two occasions."

With the 90-run thrashing at the hands of Bangladesh in Dambulla on Saturday, Sri Lanka have now lost six consecutive ODIs to add to their shocking defeat in the second and final Test match against the visitors earlier this month.

If they fail to arrest this slide and defeat Bangladesh in the remaining two ODIs, there is a strong possibility of not seeing Sri Lanka at the next World Cup.

Give Ford the sack!

Annoymous's picture

I felt that Ford is not a good choice at the time of appointment. Not sure because of lack of money or lack of proper process we didn't go after the best available under our limited financial resources.

He may be a good coach at county level but he doesn't have what it takes to be international coach. I am afraid we can't sack him because we haven't got the money to release him since he is contracted till 2019.

We can follow the Indian blue print by having someone as consultant. Like Whatmore to keep things in order. It's time to promote Vaas and Hashan in to the senior coaching set up.

It's a wake up call to the SLC. It's about time all support staff from coaching position removed. From Champakaya Ramanayake, Peeyal Wijetunge to Sanath Joysuriya needs to go.

We need to do it now if not we will go down in history like Zimbabwean side. I am not saying because what happened yesterday. If you look at the way our players body language and the way they fielded, you can clearly understand they were clueless. They didn't know what to do. Still couldn't understand why Malinda wasn't given to bowl.

Talent doesn't win you games. You need proper planning. Unfortunately Ford has no idea. I think we need to have a good support group. it's time to get s batting coach.

Sanath Jayasuriya is the culprit for this mess. We are going to go for Champions Trophy without a settled side as well. He has no patience to be a selector. You have to pick 11 players and stick with them. You can't change every match and series and expect consistency or good results. Sumathipala made a catastrophic mistake removing Kapil's Wijegunawardene' selection panel and bringing Sanath back to the helm!

It is reasonable to assume that we are almost there at the world cup qualifier. Afghanistan in supreme form so qualifier would be a difficult challenge.
I have no idea where these strategies come from. SLC has a coach, team managers, tour managers, bowling coach, batting coach, fielding coach, trainers yet no one has a single strategy. Strategy for facing this Bangladesh team should have been the pace bowling. Everybody knows and experience now that Bangladesh thrives in Sri Lankan condition which is very similar to Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has pace bowlers who can do some damage like Pradeep, Chameera, Sanjaya, Lakmal. Also, Champions trophy will be played in England so ideally, it should have been less spinning more grassy wickets. Which will negate the spin attack of Bangladesh and preparation for England?
Also the last ODI we should have been batted first after winning the toss. Under pressure Sri Lanka never going to chase 270+ targets. More spin and more swing in the second half. I think we have gifted the match by inviting them to bat.
If we lose this series India tour is the only tour we have to get some points to remain in top 7 but it's not going to be easy at all. Zimbabwe tour may be our only chance.

Amila Saman No actually winning toss and fielding was the good choice. In then last Aussie series don't u remember sl batted 1st in Dambulla and loss both of those matches.

Recently SL win every game by chasing !!!. Apart from that Ban has won 4 matches against SL before the last game and all those 4 games win by chasing them. So that decision is correct. No doubt about that. If u bat first and loose the game u can come and say it would have been bowl first wicket !!!!

It was pathetic bowling display and pathetic fielding display is the reason for the lost.

Now what would u think about ur hero Lakshan Sadakan. U always coming and shouting like he is the bowler SL should give chances. Now u don't even mention his name. He also looks very pathetic atleast for shorter versions of the game. He bowl 3 reasonable deliveries and 2 poor bowls every over which can easily put in to the bounbdary. He should also be droped !!!
