First ODI between Sri Lanka and West Indies called off due to rain

Adrian BarathAdrian Barath’s maiden ODI century saw the West Indies post a total of 245/5 in 50 overs in the opening match of the three-match ODI series between West Indies and Sri Lanka on January 31 at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground (SSC) in Colombo. Lasith Malinga, who finished with 3/51, was the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers. No result was possible and Sri Lanka were unable to bat as rain forced the abandonment of play.

Sumathipala writes to ICC in support of BCCI

Thilanga Sumathipala, the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) asking them to reconsider their decision on Kolkata's Eden Gardens stadium. The ICC stripped the venue of its first World Cup match as construction at the venue was behind schedule. The ICC deemed that the venue would not be ready in time for its first match.

“The chief organising committee of the ICC must make every endeavour to make play possible at the Eden Gardens rather than finding a way not to play,” Sumathipala wrote. “We Sri Lankans are willing to put 100 percent support behind the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and request the ICC to reconsider its decision.”

Hayden picks Sri Lanka as his favourite to win the 2011 World Cup

Mathew Hayden picked Sri Lanka to win the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. “The top four teams are Sri Lanka, Australia, India and South Africa. But Lankans are the red hot favourites,” Hayden told reporters at a charity event in India on February 01.

Umpire Dharmasena to officiate in World Cup opener

The ICC announced its World Cup match official appointments on February 02. Kumar Dharmasena will officiate in the World Cup curtain-raiser between Bangladesh and India on February 19 in Mirpur.

Jayasuriya attends Cricket Association of Bengal’s 83rd foundation day ceremony

Sanath Jayasuriya was a guest of honour at a blood donation camp organised to celebrate the Cricket Association of Bengal’s 83rd foundation day on February 03. Jayasuriya lent his support by signing donor certificates.

Underdogs Seylan Bank reach Singer-MCA Premier League final

Seylan Bank will meet MAS Unichela in the final of the 18th Singer-MCA premier league tournament which will be played on February 06 at the Colts Cricket Club grounds in Colombo after beating John Keells and Sampath Bank to reach the final.

Sri Lanka beat West Indies in second ODI

Upul TharangaAfter a dominant show by Sri Lanka’s bowlers, restricting West Indies to 203 all-out in 50 overs, Upul Tharanga led the way in Sri Lanka’s run-chase scoring his ninth ODI century in the second ODI played at the SSC in Colombo on February 03. Sri Lanka overhauled the tourists’ the Duckworth/Lewis revised total in the 43rd over scoring 199/2. Tharanga 101 and Mahela Jayawardena 48 were the not out batsmen for Sri Lanka.

Ranatunga expresses concern over Sri Lanka’s middle-order ahead of World Cup

Arjuna Ranatunga told Reuters in an interview on February 03 that he was concerned with Sri Lanka’s middle-order. “Kumar and Mahela should not be batting at number three and four. One of them has to come down to number five to bolster the middle order,” Ranatunga said suggesting Chamara Kapugedera’s promotion up the order ahead of the two senior batsmen.

A point on Arjuna's concern (of course it is his vews)....

But in my view, courtesy Samaraweera, we have that solidity in the middle so not necessarily that either Sanga or Mahela go in at no. 05 all the time. Silva or Kapu, whoever plays in the middle will surely be very aware of their roles.

So it may just happen Kapu is promoted up in the order once in a way depending on the opponents and given match situations.
