Arjuna โ€“ a born leader

Just five countries have won the 50-over World Cup, in 29 years and 10 editions. Only eight gentlemen have held aloft the trophy that symbolises global supremacy in one-day international cricket, eight individuals who have worn pride and commitment on their sleeve.

The most over-rated leader / cricketer the world has seen. Was handed a World Cup win because two teams gave us points. Tactically never did anything to inspire the team. Never had the ability to do so.

For me a good captain is one that can build up a struggling team and instill confidence and winning habits in them.
That's why I rate the likes of Clive Lloyd, Allan Border, Sourav Ganguly quite highly.
Of course they don't do it all themselves, its a collective effort from team including management/coaches etc.

By contrast Steve Waugh, Ponting, Dhoni, even Viv basically had ready made teams full of stars. There stats as captain look great! But prob a number of their teammates could have captained the same side and achieved the same results.

Arjuna falls into 1st category. I disagree with this anonymous person that he was overrated. The 2 extra points in WC meant SL qualified for Quater finals not won WC so thats nonsense!

Arjuna led way with streetfighter instincts something many SL lacked at the time, both with bat and in field. With another leader the team would have politely folded and never taken it up to the bigger teams, and Murali wouldn't have ever played again. Is that inspiring enough for you?

I think he was better tactically than Aravinda, Hashan and Dilshan. Whilst Sanath's sucess had a lot to do with Murali at his peak!

ya, i agree, arjuna was d only sri lankan captain with a sense of pride, all the others who followed him didnt hav dat pride, in my opinion dats wat the pre 96 era sri lankan players played fo, pride, coz there was nt much money in SL cricket at that time. bt after 96 there was a sudden influx of cash and since then thev bn playing fo money,( bt of course u cant blame them 4 dat,) i dare say dat if muralidaran, malinga and the other high profile SL players didnt play in d IPL they would hav won d 2011 world cup, its funny dat no indian players r in the SLPL yet the most valuble SL players play the IPL,

I am sure...! Because nobody says anything to Arjuna when the questions was about the 1996 World Cup.
