'Batsmen let the team down' โ€” Mathews

"The batsmen let the team down," said Mathews after the South African fast bowlers, led by man of the match Kagiso Rabada, finished off the tourists 15 minutes before lunch. "The bowlers did a good job but the batsmen did not put enough runs on the board."

Yes the batters let us down and have done for a long time now and this is a major issue. Even against Aus we were all out 117 on day one of the series and 26/5 in the first morning of the 3rd test. Sure we won the series but to overlook the batting issues is hiding behind smoke screens.

Shot selection and inability to construct a test innings are glaring issues for this team. We are good for 250 and 300 on a lucky day on average. Ever so often someone will get a hundred we may touch 400 but this is rare. Even in limited overs cricket, the inability to build an innings is the major problem.

We were lucky for so long with Sanga and Mahela in the team and Dilshan backing these two played the big innings but the next bunch are batting like Sanga and Mahela are from a different planet let alone sharing a dressing room with them!
