Sri Lanka owe Jayawardene a send-off

Geoff Marsh had a brief but unhindered view into the workings of the Sri Lanka side, but after his sacking said it didn't take a head coach's insight to know everything there was know about the captaincy. "Every country needs to have its best captain," he began, "and the best captain in Sri Lanka..

I am really sorry to say this but, I got to. Mahela is a person who is not destined to finish on a high. How many WC finals he was involved and ended up losing? It tells you that he is not a good finisher. So, I do not expect SL to win the 3rd test. As a Sri Lankan,I feel sorry to make this prediction.

Brilliant piece Andrew. Leading a side like SL is all in itself a huge task and MJ did so very well during his captaincy. I don't expect this side to win in Aussie land this time, but hope they don't embarrass their captain falling cheaply to another innings defeat.

As far as Angelo is concerned, indeed leading a national team with all the corruption and politics around, isn't going to be any easier. Tough times ahead.

Did they give Arjuna a "send off ?"

Mahela brought in the Money culture to cricket in Sri Lanka. It may have been unfortunate for him that the IPL and associated schemes happened during his tenure but he and Sanga are responsible for putting money before national pride.

No one can deny that the tour to England when we were asked to fill in for the West Indies was cancelled by appelaing to the president by these guys and possibly Sanath as well, of course aided and abetted by their agent Charlie Austin.

We missed an opportunity to beat England at home ( Ajantha Mendis was at his peak, Murali was still playing as was Vaasy and England were weak) putting to bed once and for all our reputation as weak tourists.

Please don't let the rose tinted glasses distort the correct picture.

I rest my case !

It is true that IPL took Malinga from SL Cricket. IPL has taken ohter good cricketrs too. Gayle from West Indies is another example. But do not blame IPL. It is a legal business. it generates tremendous amounts of money, stimulates the economy of India and provides employment for many. You can not blame Malinga or Gayle for signing up for lucrative contracts. They have every right to get paid for their talents. You can not force anyone to sign a contract. Signing a contract is an option, not a obligation.
People say SL Cricket trained Malinga. Then why can't SL Cricket train others, like Malinga, and fill the gap?

The problem is not IPL. The reason is that Sri Lanka is unable to produce genuine and talented pace bowlers to replace Malinga. We also have the same problem with batting. Do we have batsmen to replace Mahela, Kumar and Dilshan? Austrailians had that problem for a short time. But they have enough players waiting in the wings to replace the retired cricketers.

I think we do not have a competent cricket administration which can establish a system that is capable to unearth talented cricketrs and help them to become world class, who will compete with each other for a place in the national team. I strongly believe that we have lot of capable young crickters. It is the responsibilty of the authorities to find these players. Your opinion is encouraged.

This Andrew chap thinks Mahela J. has shown a "new conservatism" as captain. But anyone who did not become a cricket writer overnight knows Jayawardene was far less attacking or positive in his first stint.

Agree with Ravana, Mahela has no one but himself to blame for the endless political interference in SL cricket. He is the one who started it off for his own gains and is paying the price now.

As a fan, I have great admiration for the cricket that Sanga and Mahela played but other than that I dont think they have done anything great for SL cricket. They would never come close to Arjuna/Aravinda and the rest.

Mahela and Sanga have been able to build a great image of themselves by having excellent PR skills, good English speaking abilities...etc.

Ravana, the 2009 tour to England could be argued that it wasnt in the FTP but the real ugly side was revealed during the 2011 tour to England.

Even Dilshan, who I personally feel has collectively done more for SL than these two, left the IPL early to Eng but Sanga and Mahela remained behind and joined the tour without any proper preparation.

If anything has to be done, its Mahela who needs to do something special.
