Phew! That's a relief and much needed break going our way. Now lets make a plan to ensure we make an impact and not just make up numbers.

From the Way SL are playing right now, they have no chance in the world cup. Hopefully a miracle occurs in the next year to turn things around. SL needs to decide before the world cup on there batting lineup, whether to continue with the youngster Kusal Mendis, or use an experienced player for the world cup. In my opinion I think most of are best batsman are the all rounders like Mathews, Siriwardana and Gunaratne. If they could somehow occupy the 3,4 and 5th spot in the batting lineup then i think we will have a stronger batting side. But lets see whether players like Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhanushka Gunathilaka play well enough to retain theie places up the order.

Not sure why you are pointing fingers at newcomers like Mendis... The major problem in the current ODI side is experienced players (like Mathews, Tharanga, Chandimal, etc) are not performing well enough (i.e. they either not perform at all or play just enough to survive on the side). Under such circumstances (where there is no proper guidance/confidence given), it is difficult to imagine young players would ever mature or learn from their mistakes to become better players.

I really dont think someone like kusal mendis can be considered a 'newcomer' anymore when he has played almost 40 odi matches. Plahers like KL Rahul, Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya all have played less matches than Mendis and without a doubt they all are more consistent players like Mendis. As much as i like to see him play, SL need to consider his place in the ODI team. He should definitely continue to play test cricket though. I agree that our experienced players are not up to standard at the moment. I personally do not want Tharanga and Chandimal in the team. Mathews is now one of those players that plays just well enough to stay in the side as you said. But i definitely think that won't be the case if Mathews were to bat at 3 or 4
