Is it really time to take a look at other captaincy options?

Time and again I get tired of Angelo's captaincy, being defensive is no harm, but more often it becomes negative and let's the opposition off the hook after a good display by one of the bowlers.

I really do think we need to look for a different captain that can be a bit more attacking and also bring some more energy into the team.

Completely Agree with Avizzzy.

As the captain he didn't bring the energy to the team. It was noticed that Mathews played like he has given up the battle when SA is scoring well. He was not attacking. This put whole team's mentality down. Further, noticed Mathews's laziness in batting as well.

In this match I wonder why Mathews didn't use Kumara with the second new ball. Kumara could have come up with some quick wickets with the second new ball. If so, SA might not score this much.

Here we go again as we did after the Eng tour and before the Aus tour which we are now conveniently ignoring! Yes I here you Anji has issues but what are the options? Chandi is the obvious but last time we went down this path he lost his place in the side. Herath? Possible but he is not sure how many more tests he has in him. Tharanga? Dimuth? The question is who.

What the hell happened to Mathews?Whenever i heard his name i picture a reliable big hitter in the shorter formats and a sophisticated test batsman. Also a fast bowler with the natural skill of taking wickets. Now who is he? He struggles to get big runs, his bowling is rubbish and so bloody slow. He keeps talking about playing positive cricket but it never happens. In this match you can hear du plessis boosting the morale of his team whereas Mathews is biting his nails half the time. Whats worse is that we have no other oprion because all the others dont act positive either. Its not the players fault its the culture of Sri Lanka Cricket which is never positive. They managed to survive the last 15 years because of good players, but now with struggling players, the negative mentality is showing. If i was in charge of the team right now, i would Drop Karunaratne and Silva because their batting is very negative getting scores of 11 and 24 while soaking up 100 balls, pathetic.

I would try:

Dhananjaya de Silva (seems comfortable with the new ball)
Dhanushka Gunathilaka (no idea why he hasnt been given a chance yet)
Kusal Mendis
Roshen Silva
Angelo Mathews (im starting to not like him but we have no choice)
Dinesh Chandimal
Upul Tharanga
Rangana Herath
Suranga Lakmal
Lahiru Kumara
Vikum Sanjaya (might aswell try him because Pradeep is not performing)

Kusal Mendis is a good No.3 option. The problem is the openers are putting too much pressure by not putting any runs on the board.

Surely We have to go with some one else.Despite achieving some feats no other captain could,He does the same mistakes time and time again. If We continue with him till 2019 cant imagine what would happen to our cricket

Srilankan cricket slips further down.Change the captaincy of Mathews & give some energy to the team . Attacking captaincy would be ideal for Srilankan cricket at this situation but no option for it, DARK ERA of Srilankan cricket...
Pls change the openers & include fresh operners .
Dhanushka Gunatilaka is a talented athlete give him a chance& replace Kusal Perera

Would be good to know who is being proposed as a potential replacement for Anji. It's easy to say replace the captain when things don't go our way in alien conditions (Eng and SA for example) while ignoring a series white wash against the then number 1 team (Aus). While I agree Anji has shortcomings I am not sure who the replacement will be and if there is one.

The problem here isn't the fact that SL hasn't won any matches under Angelo, but the way they lose matches under his leadership. Surely Angelo himself is a great player, but I am not sure if his exceptional captaincy has won a lot of matches. His individual performance have definitely won test matches, like for example in England when he scored 160+. The other matches that we have won are also due to some miracles played by some individual players, captaincy has hardly influenced any wins.

Angelo has a very negative body language, which I am sure affects the entire team, at the moment they are all down and gone, only a performance from one individual can change the energy in the team like it has done in the past. so the point is Angelo cannot motivate the team at all times.

As for other options, I really don't know, but we need to try out, perhaps Herath isn't bad option, what have we got to lose anyways?

Mathews does need to be booted as skipper. While his individual contributions are invaluable, he also contributes a lot towards defeats from his poor captaincy, whether it's poor bowler management/rotation, field placement, or overall body language and attitude.

@Suren: While I agree that Karunaratne and Silva are failing and need to be changed eventually, this is test cricket, scoring 30-40 odd off 100 balls is fine, it's what test openers are supposed to do against good attacks in helpful conditions. The problem is they don't carry on and make use of starts when they get them.

Also Gunathilaka as Test opener? Have you seen his stats for FC cricket? Completely unsuited for opening in Tests. Dickwella seems like a good option in the long term, or Parnavitana (as a short term option since he's 34).

Problem is who are the other captaincy options available.

However, I see Rangana Herath as an option for the test captaincy. He could do well with the opportunity given to him in the Zimbabwe tour. Yes, it was against Zimbabwe. But since things are getting worst at the moment, why don't we try out every possible option.

On the other hand, Upul Tharanga won't be a bad option either.
