Haha... We'd have to drop half the team on that basis!! The point is, our fielders aren't poor (like Pakistan).. They are inconsistent.. The very guy who took a blinder would drop a sitter next time.. Happens all the time.. I don't think proper mental training is given to our players..
Specially UPUL THARANGA, This man comes as the opener and make very few runs and trying to fish the balls going outside the off stump and offer the wicket to the opposition very easily and go back to the pavilion giving the opening batsman's job to the next batsman to do and sit in the pavilion until the end of the first innings and come back and DROP THE CRUCIAL CATCHES AT VERY CRUCIAL TIMES OF THE VERY IMPORTANT BATSMEN enabling the opposition batsmen to take the advantage of the drop chances to make very big scores. what is the point in keeping this foolish non performer in the team. always dropping very crucial catches, this UPUL THARANGA, CHANDMAL, MENDIS,ASELA, DICKWELLA AND DANANJKAYA SHOULD get the BATTING COACHING FROM EVER RELIABLAE DILRUWAN PERERA AND HERATH how to bat with patience.all those batsmen are very big talkers not the performers. ASELA AND DICKWella proved they are not yet ready to become good test cricketers. UPUL THARANGA should go back to the school cricket. Chandimal along with Mendis has to go and play club cricket along with DAANJAYA if they R to become good test Batsmen. these Jokers can learn from DILRUWAN, HERATH AND BANGLADESHI New comers how to bat in test matches.
#3 Anonymous, you stole my thunder. People talk about stats of batting and bowling. I wonder anyone can produce the stats on our senior players fielding. Especially players like Tharanga. I think he is among the worst fielders Sri Lanka ever had. Chandimal was bad too but he has improved. I think Tharanga along with Dickwella, Pathirana are very poor fielders to be playing in higher level. I think Bangladesh is much better fielding side than ours collectively.
Not you cant drop a player for fielding as you could end up dropping quality players. Also unlike batting or bowling, fielding can be improved with training.
Fielding it is said is the "culture" of a team. It is the lifeline that ties the team togeather and its rare for good teams to have poor fielders. In short, all good teams work hard on the fielding and make it an added strength while the rest are known as also rans! It's no surprise that SL's fielding was excellent when we were competitive just the way SA or Aus are now.
A poor fielding side (except Pakistan) is a sign of where the team culture is. Anyone noticed how India's fielding has improved in recent times? No surprise they are one of the top teams.
