DDS is a much better player for the longer format than Tharanga. Even Mathews hasn't done well in the last two years in test cricket.

Unlikely it will happen. For the last test match:

Upul Tharanga
Dimuth Karunaratne
Kusal Mendis
Dinesh Chandimal
Angelo Mathews
Niroshan Dickwella
Dilruwan Perera
Malinda Pushpakumara
Lakshan Sandakan
Lahiru Kumara
Dushmantha Chameera

Since the match is dead rubber I would expect to see Sandakan, Kumara and Dushmantha play, also all of our normal fast bowlers are injured. I dont think Dhananjaya de Silva is required for the match. His bowling is quite toothless and has struggled to bat in the last few games he has played. Gunathilaka is a better option than de silva, but Gunathilaka shouldnt play either because we need a stronger bowling lineup which is why i put 3 spinners.
Dinesh Chandimal needs to step up with his batting. If he wasnt captaining, i would've considered Gunathilaka instead.

I think Dushmantha Chameera is not the same bowler after the injury. He has been bowling 137Kph recently, where he used to be 144Kph. And he does not have away swing. The left arm, Vishwa Fernando probably be better.

Upul Tharanga
Dimuth Karunaratne
Kusal Mendis
Dinesh Chandimal
Angelo Mathews
Niroshan Dickwella
Dilruwan Perera
Malinda Pushpakumara
Lakshan Sandakan
Lahiru Kumara
Vishwa Fernando

This is ridiculously stupid poll. past 10 months from Oct 2016 recall, Upul Tharanga was the most productive consistent run-maker in the side. He had scored 623 runs @ 45 Av in his past 16 test innings played up to this test with 2 x100+ & 3 x 50+ scores including the 64 runs he made with 10x4 in 1st Test Vs India before that unfortunate run-out. Upul has a more consistent run than Dimuth, having scored his big scores not limited to any particular inning of a test. The pair had done a much better job collectively than seen during past 2 years with DK/ K Silva combo.

If Failing in one test can axe such a productive player, Dimuth Karunarathne should have been axed long time ago. Before producing this marvelous inning, Dimuth Karunarathne had 25 Single-digit Test scores in his 40+ Consecutive Test stint (1/3 of his innings ended with single digit scores) over 3 years. His 25 single-digit test innings yielded astonishing 87 runs @ 3.48 Average with a highest score of 9 runs.! But SL selectors persisted with him as Opener & he succeeded today.

Both Tharanga and Gunathilake suits more for 50 over cricket and better than DDS for shorter versions. But Dhananjay de Silva belongs to a different class when it comes to first class cricket.

I think the 'drop everyone' option has simply not worked. We have chopped and changed and its clear there is simply not much around, ironically this is why Upul has found a way back. Besides, Upul deserves a full series after a string of a test here and another there.

For the most experienced cricketer in the team he is not there to knock a fifty here and there and find news ways to get out. He is there to make big and meaningful hundreds allowing for the younger players to blossom which has not happened but that doesnt mean we need to drop him mid-series...again.
