according to arjuna and some of the comments abv, SL will never find a "michael beven", a "mick hussey" or even a "russel arnold", cus everyone wants to bat up the order(including sanga and mahela) and nobody wants to drop down the order and absorb da pressure of finishing a game. dats y angelo mathews is valuable to da team, he performs well lower order(even tho sometimes he leaves too much to da end)
so hw come "very talented" kapugedara cant even match a "bit inconsistent" mathews??????

Ok just agree with Arjuna. strangely as all sri lankans i reacted to myself telling myself kapu should never play againw when he went for that first ball duck against India last week.

I had a good discussion with some friends of mine who some are also cricketers and i am mentioning something i said to them this was over facebook. i reserached on some stats and see my comments below.

55 innings of the 70 Kapu played is at 5 and lower. and the 15 between 1 and 4 .... 12 of this came in one year 2008 his best year ever which was when sanga opened with sanath and kapu batted 4. so u cant blame him .we need to blame the syystem. only 3 times other than 2008 has been given a chance up the order..... and we gave the likes of thirimanne and chandimal the backing. so do u think if u gave the 18 year old Kapugedera...(ya he is been here 6 years and his 24 now) do u reckon if we gave the boy who carted bret lee out of adelaide oval 3 times in 2006 in his first series when he should have been captaining the sri lankan under 19 team in the world cup in colombo a few more chances like we have given chandimal...i reckon he would have made it.

90 games 73 innings. my first reaction was the same. but this is a fault of the system. well chandimal is lucky. we didnt drop him we thought he wont be able to handle preassure so we left him out of the world cup squad. mahela confirmed it a few weeks ago on an interview. the stats look ugly. but u need to look at it from an opportunity perspective. 2008 was good cause he batted 4 and sanga opened dilshan and chamara silva came after him in the order that year. well they will go and drop him now for sure but people are right...u cant make him a scrape goat. when two senior pros played school boy cricket shots after setting the game up ( Vs India in Asia Cup 2012)...we set up and organize we cant finish.... a set batsman has to be in on wickets like the sub continent... what is even more bizarre is when the likes of Kapu and chamara silva didnt even make the A Team series against England A last month... but one is in the squad and the other a standby...

i'm a Huge fan of kapu ! But kapu's situation is very serious ! i think kapu did not grab his chances and he is a very unlucky guy i must say ! if you guys remember in that WC finals kapu send a bullet throw from the deep to runout Gambir(when he was in 30's) , what if sanga collect that ball ? i'm sure he gonna be a Lankan hero yet again like in the WCT20's .

and i remember in that last match vs india he did a superb stopped a flourish drive from gambir and throw it back to the sumps at virat kohils end , what if that trow hit that stumps? kohli was something around 20's i guess at that time !

so this guy really fighting with his luck atm .

But i must say chances don't come easy in your life kapu failed to grab that chances , i really feel for him , but he should go back to domestic cricket.

luck favors the brave , so i hope he will not give up .

kapu show some superb performance in the domestic arena and lets your bat talk ! you have given lots of wins for us kapu , maybe the god bless you !

Jagath is right; despite his abysmal performances he was never given any structure or even confidence. He should not be included in the squad unless initially picked; he has more than a lot to do if he wants to play well internationally and he should be given the space to do so, then make a strong comeback by shining for the selectors - not being a last minute unprepared sub who can occasionally end up the scapegoat.

The only reason we're debating about Kapu is because Mathews and Thisara are injured. There's no regular spot for him in the first-choice playing XI.

Thirimanne (opener) has done a reasonable job at five - a position which Kapu failed at miserably, averaging only 17 from 20 innings. Tharanga (opener) has done well at six, scoring 3 fifties from 4 innings. Russell Arnold (opener) also did well at six and seven, averaging 38 plus. So why cant Kapu score runs in those positions?

He was given a consistent run in '06 (16 matches),'07 (25 matches), '08 (19 matches), '09 (13 matches). And yet he failed to make a solid impression.

He hasn't done justice to his god-given talent even in first-class cricket and that too batting higher up the order, averaging only 38 from 49 matches.

This is my point: His 'List A' stats are not impressive to have such high hopes - and he bats at four in domestic one-dayers, if I'm not mistaken. His average is a poor 25 from 165 matches with only 2 hundreds. How can he be successful for Sri Lanka in the long-run, at three or four, when he hasn't done it for his own club?

The best batsmen in the team have to bat higher up the oder and Kapu does not fit the bill to displace Sanga or Chandimal.

And to add: He hasn't done much of late this domestic season to justify selection.

His last 8 innings for NCC: 0,2,1,0,10,114,27,158.

Kapu's last 8 ODI innings : 0,7,1,2,17,12,10,9.

True, he's a highly talented and skilled batsman but that alone is not enough to be successful.
