Roshan Mahanama and Sanath Jayasuriya, who set a new world record in Test cricket with a 576-run partnership on August 6, 1997, in the first Test against India, are garlanded after their feat. Although Jayasuriya narrowly missed Brian Lara's individual world record of 375, Sri Lanka set a new world record for the highest Test total in an innings. © AFP/SENA VIDANAGAMA

ROSHAN MAHANAMA & SANATH JAYASURIYA WERE THE BEST OPENING BATSMANS SRI LANKAN CRICKET HAD EVER PRODUCED ALTHOUGH ROSHAN MAHANAMA HAD TO STEP IN THE MIDDLE ORDER TO MAKE WAY FOR OPENING POSITION FOR RUMESH KALUWITHARANA WITH SANATH JAYASURIYA IN 1995-96.

the picture looks old but the memory in my mind is as if it was yesterday - watched the whole match live on Rupavahini as it was the school holidays. Wonderful memories brought back.

Can't believe its almost 17years since i witness this great partnership. Back then beating India was the easiest thing for Lanka in cricket.
