Tillakaratne Dilshan gets involved in political activities

Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan has opted to support Mahinda Rajapaksa in the January 8 presidential election. Rajapaksa's campaign office said that Dilshan met the president today with a group of youth to extend support to him. 38-year-old former national cricket captain, who will appear in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, has already appeared in television commercials in support of Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa faces a stiff challenge from the main opposition rival Maithripala Sirisena. His former Health Minister, Sirisena has caused a dent in Rajapaksa's Freedom Party with several defectors joining him. (PTI)

Why is this newsworthy? Dilshan has the same political rights as any other Sri Lankan. He can choose the party or candidate he wishes to support just like any other Sri Lankan. What exactly is the issue here? Seems like much ado about nothing.

not a surprise this from Dilshan. Can say kinda expected this from him.But didn't expect it from KUSAL PERERA and JEEWAN MENDIS.

Although I DO NOT approve cricketers endorsing politicians I have seen Lebron James, Kobe Bryant endorsing Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. So can't say it's WRONG even though am no fan of 'endorsing politicians'; Government or opposition

This shows how the srilankan cricket is politicized. what a bad precedent to the sports in srilanka. while playing for the srilankan team how can he gets involved in the politics. now with the backing of the ruling party this cricketer can do anything in the srilankan team this is how srilanka politics stands. no doubt this will lead to the disunity in the team and affect the world cup. this idiotic involvement of a present senior cricketer in the politics shows srilanka already lost the world cup. no matter what ever the politics he does after retireing from the cricket but not while in the team as a player.

@sam jay, I am puzzled by your comments. Surely Dilshan has a right to support the party and candidate of his choice. That is the essence of Democracy.

In the US, England, Canada, Australia, sportsmen and sportswomen openly support political parties and candidates. Many basketball and football players openly supported President Obama in the last election. Jack Nicklaus supported Mr. Romney. There was no uproar about it. It was treated as a matter of fact occurence. Why should it be different in Sri Lanka?

Cricketers are not Gods, or flanneled fools. As citizens of a country, they are mortals just like the rest of us. Dilshan has every right to participate in political activity if he so chooses. That is his inalienable right.
