Sobers picks Muralitharan over Warne

The greatest all-rounder in cricket history Garry Sobers has made it known what he really thinks about Australian leg spinner Shane Warne.

In a book released yesterday Sobers said he had "reservations about Shane" implying that Warne was overrated.

"Someone who is called great from today's game is Shane Warne, but I have got my reservations about Shane," Sobers wrote.

"I think he is a great bowler, but I'm not sure how well he compares with spinners overall. I think people get carried away with this man's ability as he hardly ever bowled a good googly.

"To me, Shane Warne is a great turner of the ball. I like his aggressive attitude, I love the way he attacks batsmen and I give him 100% for that as not enough spinners bowl with that approach, but in my estimation Subhash Gupte was a better legspinner."

Warne's career was plagued with scandal and controversy. If one recalls, he was thrown out of the 2003 ICC World Cup in South Africa after testing positive for a banned substance. He was later banned for a period of one year.

Sobers felt that Muttiah Muralitharan was a better bowler than Warne.

Photo: Muttiah Muralitharan“I think Muralitharan is more difficult because he develops something that no other off-spinner has ever developed. And he bowls it well. Shane Warne bowls a leg break that turns big, a googly that you can go to sleep and wake up and see it. He (Warne) doesn't have the same kind of difficulty like Murali in destroying a batsman. If you put two new batsmen who have never seen either of the two into bat, Muralitharan will give them more trouble than Share Warne would,” Sobers said in 2007.

Sobers also felt that Muralitharan's action was clean and that he was not a chucker.

"As far as what I see, it is very difficult to be able to track a ball with off break action that turns some leg to off, very difficult, you can't chuck that. Because it comes over the top, you can't chuck. You’ve got to bowl it.

"Muralitharan’s hand is never straight and that is one of the things. He starts very close to his chest. He doesn't start like a normal bowler with arms up there where it is stretched out already.

"You don't chuck with your wrist, but you chuck with your elbow. And the definition of chuck, if the world has forgotten, is the straightening of elbow at the point of delivery and his (Muralitharan’s) elbow does not straighten at the point of delivery."

It is just not Sobers, but, in recent interviews, Rahul Dravid, one of the top 5 in playing spin during the Warne / Murali era, rated Murali as a far more difficult bowler to face and tat the Indians spent hours discusssing him before games. If Tendulkar, Sewag, Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly did just that (5 of the top 10 against spin) the answer is obvious.

Also add Don Bradman to the list. Don supported Murali all the way.

Warne had a gift. That was the gift of the gap. He got wickets through harassment and sledging.

The convicts will be very angry to hear this. Ha ha! Finally they will see that outside of the small group of past players/umpires and Australians, everyone else knows Murali is a genius. We are blessed to see him play. Once in a lifetime event!

Oh come on guys do we really have to sink so low? This whole Murali vs Warne thing is a matter of opinion. Half the cricket world will say Murali is better and the other say Warne. It's a never ending debate.

But that doesn't mean any of the two is lesser than the other. Whatever Sobers say, Warne too was a genius. And he got wickets because of sledging, good for him. Cricket should not be a place for pansies - if you can't cope with a little bit of sledging you might as well not play at all.

Instead of trying to put one of them down, I'm glad to think that I lived in an era probably the two best spinners of all time bowled and that I saw them both operate with my own eyes.

Um no Mr. Sach. Your opinion and mine doesnt matter. The world's greatest cricketers' opinions matter.

Even those who say he chucks is an opinion. The fact is that he does not because the ICC has cleared him and that's the only thing there is no doubt about.

Dude, I haven't said anywhere he chucks. Where did you get that from. Yes, world's best cricketer's opinions matter more than yours or mine, but what I wanted to say is just because Sobers said this it is no reason to condemn Warne who is a truly great bowler. And there will be so many great cricketers who say Warne is better as well. This is a debate that'll never end. Why can't you guys just for once not try to figure our who's better and enjoy them both?

Both are legendary bowlers.I agree with Sobers about the overrated part.Warne was overrated so much for his Ashes glory while Murali never got enough media coverage & hype.

I am Tamilian but I say anyone who says Murali does not chuck is a liar; guys like Murali have no chance to play cricket in uncorrupt white countries like England, Australia and New Zealand; they would not have a chance even in black countries like South Africa and West Indies; they have conscience; if Chinese play cricket they would not allow Murali to bowl; good Chines are very orthodox. Middle and South Asians lie to ourselves and others all the time; however for all its imperfections the top Central Indian Institutions are adequately honest bodies and would not have allowed Murali; and even though Pakistan is a country of rogues Murali would not have been allowed to bowl even if had converted to Islam; but we Sri lankans are a brain distorted race; both Tamils and Sinhalese; it is a crime to compare a chucker to the greatest cricketer since Viv Richards.
