List below is the stats of Chandimal after Sanga/Mahela retired from SL cricket (Stats after 2015 world cup)-

Matches 10, Runs 821 and Average is 48.29.
After Sanga and Mahela retired Sri Lanka won 3 test matches and Chandimal heavily contributed to 2 Test wins out of the 3. He was named as man of the match for one test win and he scored 150+ in the other test match, He was the highest run getter in NZ tour. Also he was the highest Asian test run scorer in 2015. So he has perfectly filled one void created by Sanga and Mahela. I think stats reveal everything. So you can’t deny the fact that he has been the no1 test batsmen after Sanga/Mahela retired till now for SL cricket.
Matches 12, Runs 309 and Average is 44.14.
After Sanga/Mahela retired, Chandimal Average 44.14 in 2015, 2nd highest average in ODI team and he has played few match winnings knocks against Pakistand tour.  Not to disrespect Mahela but highest average Mahela has gained for a calendar year is 46.90. So it is again very clear that the Chandimal has strongly filled the gap created by Sanga/Mahela duo.
LD Chandimal
Matches 15, Runs 329 and Average is 23.50.

His T20 stats do not look promising averaging 24 and SR is 110.
So anyway, my point is-
It’s not Chandimal who should take the responsibility of SL cricket failure, and it’s not happening after Sanga and Mahela retired, we had not been playing better cricket even when they play for SL . We lost to SA,NZ etc when they both were playing for SL team, we never did well in 2015 one day world cup tour, even if you check the 2014 T20 world cup stats, Sanga scored only 71 runs playing 6 matches in that world T20 tournament.  It’s the bowlers who made the difference.
Now you guys really expect this team to perform any better after they loosing world most dangerous T20 bowler Lasith Malinga, one of the most dangerous T20 batsmen Kusal Perera, two world class batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawarda, and banning the most effective T20 bowler Sachithra, also don’t forget Nuwan Kulasekara was the No1 T20 bowler at that time... .So please ! It’s not Chandimal who is failing it’s the whole team failing and totally a bad days for SL cricket and it’s not the first time this is happening, after 1996 world cup we did exceptionally bad in 1999 world cup. Do not forget we lost to Kenya in 2003, Mahela never scored a double digit score in 2003 world cup playing all the matches. Sangakkara has only scored 1 century in his first 100 ODI matches averaging below 29...list will go on-
Guys be patient !

Yes I also believe T20 is not for Chandi, at least for now. He should find his game in limited overs and once confident is gained he can think of playing the T20s..He can be a perfect 1 down batsmen. If you look at his dismissals in recent matches you could see he always got out due to an unorthodox shot he trying to play..

you said...

"Mahela never scored a double digit score in 2003 world cup playing all the matches. Sangakkara has only scored 1 century in his first 100 ODI matches averaging below 29...list will go on... "

Then why Upul Tharanga's career was put on hold at his prime for so long without any significant chances in any format (since 28 yrs) just after his career best 174* ..? after all he had scored 13 odi Hundreds from 156 odi innings and had topped 6,500 international runs with 48 fifty plus scores and won 12 mom awards in international cricket (maintained 35 Av as No1 batter in 151 odi innings 74 SR).. Apart from Mathews, is there anyone in the current bunch, who can even come closer to his consistency in productivity, despite getting numerous consecutive chances?

I agree...Chandimal is the best among the bunch who were lucky enough to get consecutive chances in every format during past 3 yrs.... obviously he should be in Tests /Odis. But Thiri is far unreliable.

@KaZsa : U said...

" When it comes to chances. I know both Thiri and Chandimal had a bad series. But they were given the opportunity because they earned it by out scoring others in Australia, ENG and SA when other couldn't..."

My question is then why Tharanga was overlooked for 3 yrs now.... despite having scored 1,631 runs with 35.45 Av from 51 odis played against Test playing nations outside sub continent in those difficult conditions?

Upul has SL EVER-BEST Batting record (in SL cricket history) playing in England scoring 347 runs @ 69.40 Av - 84 SR with 2x100 & 1x50 from 5 Odis.... but never selected to tour England since then . Why?

Also, Tharanga has the SL EVER-BEST batting record (57.80 Av) Vs Eng in Odis (Sanga has the 2nd best with 47.79 Av):

Scoring 578 runs @ 57.80 Av - 78 SR with 3 x 100+ & 2 X 50+ scores... but NEVER given any opportunity to play Vs Eng since 2011 WC, where he scored an unbeaten WC-QF winning inng with 102* ... Why he was overlooked preferring every other player including rookies, despite such productivity..????

It is so funny and pathetic to see how blind some of our fans and former selectors were.. looking & pricking every nonperforming Assss**** while overlooking the nucleus of the tornado to find solutions to the grave disruption SL cricket is suffering today..............! :D

Look, Tharanga was dropped to give chance to Kusal. That was extremely wrong. He didn't do much wrong leading up to that and even he performed very well in that series in the middle order. He should have never been dropped. Not because he is the best batsman in the world, but he did fairly well for SL during his time as an opener and he didn't do much wrong to be dropped.

But here we are talking about another player, and it has nothing to do with the injustice that happened to Tharanga.

As i agreed in my posting, there is no issue with Chandimal's selection in Odis & Tests,... but brought up this point, since you all were talking about other non performing long-time opportunity-wasters like Kithuruwan, Kapu,, Thiri as well as over the hill oldie Dilshan to find solutions. No offense intended mate :)

Good point on Chandi but I do reckon he should continue to play t20 simply because we have no options and he is succeeding in the other two formats.

Excellent point about the bowlers. There were days when we could defend low scores on asian tracks thanks to an excellent bowling attack but now we are bare on both fronts and fielding.

Chandi is the best test player we have in our country along with Mathews, he provedit in the recently concluded test matches against India, Windies and New Zealand. he is a born test cricketer in my view and he proved it even in his debut against South Africa.

This proves that while he is one of our better players in Tests and ODIs he is not ,and possibly might never be, a reliable T20 player.

Chandimal debuted in 2010... has been playing since then... Has he played like matured guy like Marvan or Mahela ?

@MDKJulius Caesar: What about Thanraga epic failures in 2011 worldcup Final.. One reason we lost to India.. just scored 2 runs in 20 balls in powerplay overs..

@cricexp: Sangakkara may have scored 1 hundred, but he has scored more than 25 fifties(50+) within 1st hundred , with much useful Match winning partnersips.
