tILLAKARATNE dILSHANSri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sent out a press release this morning announcing that they would retain Tillakaratne Dilshan as Sri Lankan captain until December 31, 2011.

Here's an excerpt,

"Sri Lanka Cricket is pleased to inform the Public and the Media that Honorable Minister of Sport Mahindananda Aluthgamage has approved the appointment of all rounder T.M.Dilshan as the National Captain for all three formats of the game till 31 Dec 2011 with immediate effect."

Sri Lanka will be in South Africa until the end of January, 2012. Perhaps SLC and the minister hope to appoint a new captain midway through the tour?

Mahindananda is the mother of all cluelessness in matters concerning Cricket. He is a square peg in a round hole. And an empty vessel which makes most sound. Why does SLC get inept and inefficient personnel starting from Asantha deMel, Arjuna,DS desilva, Nishantha and now the mother of all blunders the Honourable Minister of Sports, Mr Mahindananda. SriLanka cricket is the laughing stock in the entire world and the finale was Sanath Jayasuriya playing in one match and retiring.

The logical thing to do would have been to appoint Dilshan until the end of the South Africa tour, but I guess SLC and the so-called sports minister want to change horses' midstream.

Their thought process is brilliant - a case study/template on sports management for the world to take note - India, England, Australia and South Africa should follow our system.

I think the minister and the previous interim committee including the current lot, should be bestowed with honorary doctorates from a university in China or Russia, for showing the world how things should be done ;-)

I have a question. Why does a minister who is supposed to help develop sports in the country get involved in a selection process or being a spokesperson of one specific sport in a country? I don't see this happening with any other country? What qualifications does he have to be involved in Cricket specifically?

This is SLC for you. We have come to expect this from them. There is no logical reason to make a public statement on how long Dilshan will be retained as captain.
