Selection incongruity derailed SL's journey to 2015 World Cup pinnacle, exactly as predicted!

As expected, Sanath, Marvan & Mathews, have completely ruined all hopes of Cricket fans in Nation SL. This pathetic ending was clearly predicted since December by me in "The selection incongruity that could derail SL's journey to 2015 World Cup pinnacle" & a few others in some blog postings, If not for the hard efforts of Sanga & Dilshan, SL wouldn't have even entered the Quarter Finals.

Those people who are responsible for this downfall have no shame or integrity whatsoever. Otherwise who would send a proven internal failure like Kusal Perera to open in such an important World Cup  Quarter Final match ? Kusal pushed Dilly to fail & Sanga to Open (Virtually Sanga had to do this repeatedly in most innings, facing the new ball). Unfortunately, this time it pushed him to a shell, curtailing his normal stroke play & forced him to protect his wicket for the sake of stabilizing effort. Somehow, Sanga had to stop the inevitable rot already initiated by Kusal, in the 2nd over (as usual). He knew his presence was vital to put up a defendable score on the board, since Dilly too got out early & he didn't have any other reliable, experienced batsmen in the playing XI, who is capable of building a long partnership, other than Mahela.

Unfortunately, Mahela was completely out of form, since his solitary Ton Vs AF. Thirimanne has the ability, but he is lacking the most valuable experience & temperament required to put up such a big partnership, against a formidable side.Especially, under immense pressure in a WC knockout game.Skipper Matews is useless in that sense. SL had the ideal option at their disposal, but unfortunately, Tharanga was the least important outcast in the eyes of SL's decision making supremoes, on tour.

Now this has become the biggest joke in international podium. Kusal is a player, who had already ruined one global tournament ICC-CT in 2013, scoring just 14 runs from 4 innings @ 3.5 Average, apart from his 26 single digit scores & 7 ducks, failing to survive beyond 10 balls in more than 50% of his 43 ODIs gifted at a trot by Sanath, during past couple of years..!

The following contrasting piece of stats alone would prove the absolute reality & says the long story, in short..!!!

2011 - WC QF : SL Openers:

1) WU Tharanga - Not Out -102* runs  -   SR 83.60 - 12 x 4 - 1 x 6

2) TM Dilshan - Not Out -    108* runs   -     SR 93.91 - 10 x 4 - 2 x 6

2015 - WC QF - SL Openers:

1) KUSAL Perera - 3 RUNS -   10 BALLS  -   SR 30.00 - 4 x 0 - 6 x 0

2) TM Dilshan -      0 runs      - 7 balls      -    SR 00.00 - 0 x 4 - 0 x 6

Batting was SL Strength, but SL selectors left out the 3rd MOST Productive Batsmen in Global Competitions,( WU Tharanga: 26 innings = 20 WC+  6 CT - 1013 Runs – 75.78 SR  -  42.20 Av – 4 x 100 – 5 x 50), They  preferred Kusal Perera & Thisara Perera (constant failures) over Upul Tharanga, as repeatedly done during the past couple of years .

Look at what SA did in this QF. Bowling is SA 's strength & they were bold enough to go with FOUR frontline Pacemen & a Specialist Spinner. Ultimately they utilized their strength to the max, to blew away SL's below strength batting unit (assembled with weak links linked to the Almighty Selectors on tour). For SA, it became easier than a walk in the park, thanks to our unforgivable way of team selections. SL selectors have become the laughingstock to the whole World  ..!

Thoroughly DISGUSTING... say the least..!!

Blame the selectors for cricketers failure.

Close the ministry of crab, hotels, entertainment joints run by part time cricketers turned businessmen.

Our 1996 team had no businessmen at that time.

You are spot on HumbleBee. If someone (you are not a soothsayer) can predict so precisely the entire picture (episode by episode) about to happen, well in advance, it shows there is lot of reality in it.

On the other hand, it proves the absolute bareness of SLC selectors, coaches & the skipper (suppose to be all professionals), who are unforgivably responsible for flattening the hopes of an entire nation (like a sand castle), with grave misdoings to satisfy their own motives.

If they keep these culprits any longer, that will be the end of SL cricket. Mr. Minister, if you are responsible for the selection committee, then you have a prime duty on your hands to remove Sanath Jayasuriya from selections, immediately.! since, this guy will never resign. the coach Marvan & the skipper Mathews should be changed as well. Clearly, Mathews was behind Thisara Perera & Dimuth right from the beginning, as Sanath was behind Kusal perera. They all contributed big time for this disgraceful flop.

The most amazing thing is Sanath & Co, Marvan / Mathews have tried out every other player to open with Dilshan despite repeated failures, except for putting back SL's regular opener up to 2013, Upul Tharanga, who had opened 156 innings for SL & had topped 5k+ runs in 2013 as the Second Fastest in SL history to do so.

Kusal Perera was given 40 ODIS to open & miserably failed in most, ruining SL's winning chances including TWO Global Tournaments (2015 WC & 2013 -ICC-CT) to collect a dismal 41 runs @ an Average of 6.8, opening the floodgates for SL.

Dimuth was given another 17 OdIs consistently, to collect just 190 runs @ 15.83 Av.

Thiri was given 12 ODis to open & he did little better than the other two, (purely riding on his luck, due to dropped easy slip catches, in most inning). He collected 382 runs @ 34.72 Av.

Upul Tharanga, the most productive well experienced opener who had scored 4902 runs as Number One Opener maintained an Average of 34.27 from 151 innings with 13 x 100 & 28 x 50 was ruthlessly RESTRICTED to just 6 hand picked solitary ODI innings, months apart during the past 20 months since 2013 July. He was Never given any reasonable window of opportunity to reclaim his spot, despite impeccable consistent performances in SL-A, & Domestic Premiere League tournaments.

Obviously, this was a well calculated viscous treatment rendered by the above mentioned culprits, at the cost of SL cricket.

My following prediction stated in the previous blog has come true!

It is worthwhile looking at SL's MOST PRODUCTIVE Batsmen in Global Competitions in ODIs (WC & ICC-CT Tournaments) to date:

1) KC Sanagakkara: 55 in (34 WC+21 CT)11 no - 2170 r (1487 WC+683 CT) 2631 b – 82.47SR - 49.31 Av – 6 x 100 –11 x 50

2) TM Dilshan: 37 in (24 WC+13 CT) 8 no - 1475 r (1112 WC+363 CT) 1603 b – 92.01SR - 47.96 Av – 5 x 100 – 4 x 50

3) WU Tharanga: 27 in (21 WC+ 6 CT) 2 no - 1017 r (697 WC+320 CT) 1342 b – 75.78SR - 40.68 Av – 4 x 100 – 5 x 50

4) M Jayawardene: 54 in (33 WC+ 21 CT) 6 no -1838 r (1096 WC+742 CT) 2139 b – 85.92SR - 38.29 Av – 4 x 100 – 5 x 50

Unfortunately, The Third MOST Productive Batsmen in Global Competitions for SL, Opener Upul Tharanga (who Opened 156 inning for SL) has been assigned to play the BENCH WARMER`s role in this WC. His place has been compromised yet again by the selectors, to insert their preferred underperforming failures. It seems, selectors allow those below par players to continue their doom & gloom journey in the shelt

Obviously, this was a well calculated viscous treatment rendered by the above mentioned culprits, at the cost of SL cricket.

Sanath has accomplished his mission. He selected the team in order to prevent KS and MJ from a winning a WC. Now Sanath is at least one up on KS and MJ. No WC for the duo. Arjuna may be happy too.

Chances of SL winning a WC in the future is almost Zero. 1996 team members will be our only WC heroes. So whenever a WC comes around, senior members of that team will be the "GO To" guys for promotion of the WC.

I live in Australia I seen blunder in the selection of operners.. when Jasuriya said that Upul can play in any possition ,evident to his hostile attitude towards Tharanga(Upul), I have no relationship to any player. But followed cricket from my childhood ,Few try to dump him from cricket. Why he was not. Given several chances. It was only seniors who did the major role. Present Sri Lanka team never learn lesson if present selectors remain in future.

I dont buy this "Upul Tharanga would have won us the WC" theory.

The author refers the 2011 QF V 2015 QF. Are you seriously blaming Kusal for this? There is a reasonable cricket explanation for this. 2011 was at the RPS and Eng opened with a spinner, which is rather different to Steyn and Abbot swinging and seaming with bounce on a fresh SCG wicket. Few openers would have survived such an opening spell while most sub-continental openers would have relished a weak Eng attack at the RPS.

For those still missing the point of Kusla, here it is one last time. The idea here is not to compare a record of someone who is relativle new against another who has been around for a while. Neither is to compare a guy who plays high risk cricket against a traditional opener - I presume its clear this sort of comparision doesnt make sense.

Kusal has the potential to bring something different at the top of the order and SL are trying to cultivate that talent. Unfortunately it hasnt worked. The prize if it works is an aggressive batter at the top of the order which a rare luxury, which is why we are trying so desperately to make this work.

If this is still not clear look at it this way. We all know what Sanath broght to the top of the order but since he left, we havent had anyone of that calibre. That's becuase that sort of talent is rare and when something even close comes along, you dont just throw it out by compairing to someone like Tharanga!
