Randiv's omission hard to grasp

The selectors have named the final squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 minus one of Sri Lanka's brightest new prospects - Suraj Randiv. They have chosen, instead, to go with Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath to partner the great man, Muttiah Muralitharan.

The move is a strange one when you consider how in all of Sri Lanka's recent tours, Randiv has been their spinner of choice. Neither Herath nor Mendis got a chance in Australia recently.

But what may have altered the thinking of the selectors could be the hammering Randiv recevied in Test cricket recently - he conceded more than 200 runs in an innings twice in 2010.

It's a really tough call on the youngster who has performed well, at times in tough conditions for spinners. How the selectors can justify selecting Mendis and Herath over Randiv is pretty hard to grasp.

Please share your views below. Would you pick Mendis or Randiv - Herath or Randiv?

I think the thinking was that
1)Randiv is more effective on fast bouncy wickets and less effective on slow low tracks (the sort of thing we have for the world cup)
2)We already have one right arm off spinner (murali) so we need to a leggie (mendis) and a left armer (rangana).

Flabbergasted with the decision to leave Randiv!! Atleast they should have swapped Herath with Mendis.

Just thinking how Randiv himself would taken this.He surely would have been expecting to be selected based on how his peformances have been.I really feel sorry for him.He did nothing wrong to not warrant selection.
I hope the selectors have not destroyed a cricketer here

@gayang3 - 1)Did you watch the domestic semi finals in RPS and how the pitch behaved? It's kinda bouncier than the normal SL pitch. Ideal for someone like Randiv who skids the bowl. So no point in dropping him.
2)Randiv,Murali n Mendis are three different spin options. Randiv is a conventional finger spinner and Mendis is a mystery finger spinner. Murali is a wrist spinner. So no point in dropping him for that reason either.

Tough decision to make for the selectors and really tough on Randiv no doubt. But this happens in sport and at least the decision was based with the best interests of the team in mind and not a political one. Also, it might not have come entirely as a surprise to Randiv because one would think he would have been aware that he got more opportunities in the past 12 months due to Murali being rested.

Another huge element lossed by Randiv's absence is his crack fielding, especially when held up against Mendis's poor fielding. However, I do agree with the final selection because while SL may well not play Mendis against India, he could be a match winner against some of those other teams who have seen less of him or not seen him at all. So I believe that Mendis had to be in the squad. So too Herath as a leftie is a must, and who will almost certainly play if and when we meet India. So that leaves Murali!! That's a no brainer so it had to be Randiv.
