Most contrasting outcome of the SLC- T20 League- 2018 tournament is the repeated re-endorsement of most valuable, but grossly underrated/overlooked Opener in SL, Upul Tharanga's value to SL Cricket.

His astonishingly steady up-rise seen since the begriming of 2017; as the Most CONSISTENT & ATTACKING Opener of SL is well above the rest..! THIS IS A FACT ENDORSED BY PURE PERFORMANCE (not by never materialized mere expectations, potentials, technicalities than success in the middle, that kept going some other lucky ones, always preferred over Tharanga for more than 3 years now).
(mostly over hyped & less productive favorites in limited over formats - ie; Chandimal, K Mendis, Danushka Gunathilake etc.- of SL Coach & Selectors, who were always preferred above Upul Tharanga.... as seen in  recent AXING from solitary t20 vs SA, due to a brief lean patch of Tharanga seen in the recent Odi series Vs SA. Even after having a well maintained consistent productivity over past 2 years 41.27 Average, he was immediately axed after his first lean patch in 2 yrs .! The biggest joke is, Constant failures in past 12 months like Chandimal 23.25 Av / Kusal Mendis 18.77 Av / Dhanushka Gunathilake 17.75 Av were in the playing XI.

Upul Tharanga's  consistently outstanding batting Achievements since January 2017:

1) Scoring over 1k (1,011) odi runs @ 48 av- 92 SR in 2017 - 2x100+ & 6 x50+  (World's 3rd best odi batter in 2017)

2) Topping Sri Lanka Super Four Provincial Limited Over Tournament (List-A), 2018 in Batting /  with

- Most runs            396 @ 66 Av - 109 SR
- Most Sixes           9   x 6
- Most Boundaries 47  x 4
-  Most Hundereds & Fifty plus scores  2 x 100+ & 2 x 50+

From just 6 innings @ 66 Average & 109 SR becoming the Best Batter of the tournament & winning the Championship for Galle, leading the side from front as skipper  & scoring a match-winning 124 runs (122b) in the Final, filled with  13 x4 & 3 x6 @ 102 SR.!

3) Topping Sri Lanka SLC T20 League, 2018 in Batting / with

- Most Runs           414 @ 104 Av  - 171 SR
- Most Sixes            28 x 6
- Most Boundaries  32  x 4
- Most Most Hundereds & Fifty plus scores      2 x 100+  &  2 x 50+

From just 6 innings @ 104 Average & 171 SR becoming the Best Batter of the tournament & winning the Championship for Colombo, leading the side from front as skipper & carrying the bat throughout the inning in the Final with a match-winning unbeaten 104* runs (55b) filled with  6 x4 & 9 x6 @ 189 SR ...!

Upul Tharanga also reaffirmed his value as a Match Winning batter in crucial FINALS, apart from the above; again in 2018 Triangular International ODI Tournament played in BD in 2018; winning the Man of The Match award in the final that SL won mainly thanks to his vital highest score (56 runs) of the side helping to build 3 vital stands of 34 for the 2nd wkt, 72 for the 3rd wkt & 45 for the 4th wkt on an extremely difficult wicket.

I am always backing this genuinely gentleman guy Upul Tharanga, for his humbleness. I hate to see continuous victimizations faced by him despite truly amazing batting talents, seniority, genuineness & most of all.... because of half-blind dummies always criticize him in these forums & Nepotistic society clearly prevailing in Sri Lanka cricket's Colombo based administration  ! I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A GUY HITTING 28 SIXES & 32 BOUNDARIES (= 296) in his total 414 runs scored from 242 balls facing all the best bowlers of SL in 6 innings...?

Truly amazing Opener! It was a delight to watch him whipping all around the park putting best of the best bowlers in SL to the sword. I am one of the lucky guys who watched the fantastic final at RPS.

Only a highly skillful batter could hit that many sixes and fours at will to all corners of the park with perfectly executed cricket shots in the text book. Thank you Upul for the entertainment provided to so many cricket fans. You are the best opener we ever had.

I watched the fantastic batting display showed by Upul in the the final yesterday and one question bothering me since then. Why did they drop Tharanga for the solitary t20 played vs SA? Did Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilake, Dhanajaya de Silva have done any thing at all in past 12 months compared to Upul Tharanga in domestic or in limited over internationals to be in the playing XI over him ?

I think Hathurusinghe has to get rid of his favorites oriented selection policy & give true performance merit to where it belongs. This is a must for SL cricket to go forward, especially in limited over cricket & to have any hope on upcoming WC in 2019. Any other nation would love to have such an experienced Opener in immaculate form like Tharanga as their Opener!

It is high time to open eyes & shed ongoing petty personal affinities/ preferences based on useless expectations

Hathurusinghe should recognize the true performance abilities, consistently proven even beyond limits to date, to cement Upul Tharanga's spot as SL's permanent Opener & help to build his confidence further by giving him the constant Opening spot in the side in all forthcoming matches leading to World Cup! After all he is one of the most experienced Opener in the world today backed with 9,000 international runs, 18 tons and 45 fifty pluses to be the leading international run-maker in SL today. Beside his past credentials, SIMPLY HE HAD DONE MORE THAN ENOUGH during past 2 years to be the regular Opener in SL side!

I fully agree with the author of this blog rightly pointed out the on going shabbiness in selections.

Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya recently named Gunathilaka as one of the players who could break his Sri Lankan record for most ODI centuries – 28.

Same Sanath J is the one who stalled Upul Tharanga's ODI career at 28 yrs of age in mid 2013 for more than 3 years virtually without any ODI exposure. This AXING happened just 3 weeks after, Upul scored his career best ODI score of unbeaten 174* Vs India (his 13th TON)& topped 5,000 runs as 2nd quickest SL in 2013 July.

Sanath picked clueless Dimuth (15.8 av in odi) to open in NZ/WC in 2015 prior to WC, overlooking UT. Dimuth ended up wasting 7 odi innings to collect 106 runs at 15 av – 65 SR thanks to SJ’s parochial selections. UT was overlooked for NZ tour-Test/Odi/WC series squads in 2014 Dec to 2015 April, despite being the highest batting contributor in previous Test series decider with 92 & 45 V PK in the end of 2014. That was SL’s last Test series win against a formidable side up to 2016 & overlooking of highest batting contributor for the next series squad (unrelated to injury), was the first such despicable omission happened in world cricket.

Two previous occasions that SJ omitted UT from the squads selected to Eng comes to my mind. In June 2013 - ICC-CT, he selected Kusal Perera over UT. In that flopped Global tournament Kusal managed 14 runs at 3.50 Av – 61 SR, dumping 4 Odis. But, strangely in the following year 2014 June, UT was overlooked again & Kusal was selected to ODI series in Eng, despite his pitiful record in Eng & the 4 ball duck in Ireland just before the selections. Thanks to SJ, within 2 yrs KJP had played 2 Odis more in Eng than Upul’s 5 Odis in 10 yrs. Just looking at Kusal’ s overall record in Eng: 7 in- 52 runs - 7 av… with Upul’s 5 in – 347 runs- 70 av tells the long story in short at that time: )

Sanath may have prevented Tharanga from reaching his 28 tons record by wiping-off 3+ yrs of Upul's prime Odi career!

@ MDK - It is highly unlikely for Danushka to make that record during his career. He is already 27 yrs and only one Century he has made so far from 33 odis & average is just 30.

Sanath should know better :)
