In Pakistan Odi series whitewash, SL batting failures among bottom 5 performed:

Chandimal 5 odis - 41 runs @ 8.2 Av

Thisara 5 odis -91 runs @ 18.2 Av

Dickwella 5 odis - 62 runs @ 12.4 Av (Even Dikwella totally failed in the series)

Siriwardane 5 odis - 24 runs @ 4.8 Av

Kusal Mendis 2 odis -12 runs @ 6.0 Av

Sadeera 2 odis - 0 runs @ 0.0 Av

Kapu 1 odis - 18 runs @ 18.0 Av

They all collectively managed just 248 runs from 25 innings @ 9.92 Av.

If anyone expect the Skipper to pull miracle victories from this kind of batting side, they must be out of their minds.

Even Upul had tried to materialize that miracle in 2nd Odi with an unbeaten 112* runs after limiting mighty Pk to a moderate target of 220 on a difficult wicket.
But rest of the SL batsmen made this below par score an impossible one, with slow and negative batting. Other Top 6 batters collectively scored only 34 runs in that Odi.

Tharanga with some support came from tail ender Vandarsay (22) put up a fighting 76-run 8th wkt stand. Upul rose to the occasion & tried hard single handedly to win the match for SL coming so close. But two tailenders were ran out leaving him stranded, he couldn't pull out one of the most stunning wins of his career. If at lest one other batters from top 7 were capable enough to score 20 runs as tail ender Vandersay did to support Upul in that occasion , SL could have easily wiped off that deficit of 32 runs to pull off a great win and could have avoided the series whitewash as well.

this blog has a worthy crystal clear glance at obvious reality.

Vs Pk - whitewashed 5Odi series, only 2 guys from top 5 (without considering Thirimanne who scored his runs with unacceptably low pathetic 66 SR) were there and ALL of the bottom ranked 5 failures occupied the spots in batting line up from number 1 to 7. Who could lead this kind of batting unit to win matches? Even crafty skippers like Ricky Ponting, MS Dhoni or Mahela would not be able to pull any wins with this kind of batting lineup.

you can make all the excuses you want for Tharanga fact is out of the 22 matches Tharanga has captained he lost 16 matches with 2 no results.

16/20 = 80% loss ratio. Excluding the 2 no results.

You can't captain a team but not take responsibility for the teams losses. That's what being a captain means to inspire your cricketers to play good cricket and be competitive. Sorry to say but under Tharanga this has not happened. If he is captain for the India series we have to see how it goes because another 5-0 loss would mean hes out of a job.

The defeats are clearly nothing to do with captaincy. Completely overlooking the underline problem visible to any dummy and blaming the skipper is pure nonsense or a prejudice conclusion.

Unlike many skippers seen in the past who always put the blame on others, Tharanga took the full responsibility, despite having to lead a hopelessly depleted side filled with bitter batting failures & out of form non-performers (Chandimal, Kapu, Thiri, Milinda, Thisara, Mendis etc), nowhere near full strength....... Look at recent series whitewash vs Pk. It was mainly due to, SL batting failures among top 7 in this series (Chandi 5- 41, Thisara 5-91, Dickwella 5-62, Siri 5- 24, Mendis 2-12, Sadeera 2-0, Kapu 1- 18). They collectively managed just 248 runs from 25 innings @ 9.92 Av in entire 5-odi series.

Do you think even Ricky Ponting or MS Dhoni could lead this kind of a dead side to win matches? Or are you expecting Tharanga to become a magician to turn the inevitable results with such a side?

Remember 8 matches of his 16 losses were played with above 5 jokers (or some failed rookies like Sadeera) in the batting unit placed at the bottom in performance rankings as shown in above blog(or some failed rookies like Sadeera), with averages ranging from 11 to 22....!!!!

That is 8/16 = 50 % of his lost matches (Vs India 3 & Pak 5). So what is the point pointing finger at Tharanga for 16 losses? The truth is SL lost only a single full series vs mighty SA in SA under Upul, leading a full strength side.

You are talking about inspiring the team as captain and leading them from front to play good competitive cricket.

Are you saying Tharanga Scoring 552 runs @ 55 Av- 88 SR with 1x100 & 4 x 50 from
14 odis played since June 01, 2017 is not good enough to inspire the team from front to play good competitive cricket, if capable enough?

Tharanga even became the first SL batsman to carry his bat out in an Odi match when he scored an unbeaten 112* out of his team’s score of 187 in the 2nd Odi Vs Pak at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. He fought hard until the end to bring a victory for SL, but unfortunately ran out of partners & stranded at the end just short of 32 runs. Upul contributed 59.89 percent of team’s total which was only the 2nd highest after Australian Damian Martyn’s innings of 116 not out in a total of 191 which contributed 60.73 of his team’s total. Overall, Tharanga became only the 11 th batsman to achieve the feat in 50 overs Odi).Tharanga and Vandarsay (22) put up a fighting 76-run 8th wicket stand. Tharanga rose to the occasion and tried his best to single handedly win the match for SL. But with last two batsman were ran out, he couldn't pull out one of the most stunning wins ever seen. If at least one of the top 7 batters managed to stay with him for a little while scoring at least 20 runs like tailender Vandersay did, the 32 runs deficit could have been easily wiped off to win the match. Similar thing happened in SA vs mighty SA, after Upul's knock of 119 made @ 132 SR and putting up 139 for the 1st wkt in 16 ovs & raising it to 216 for 2 wkts before getting out, leaving just 150 more to score, with 7 wkts in hand. But fell short by 40 runs.

If SL batting unit had a single batter or two who was capable enough to support Tharanga's lone battle efforts with some substantial contribution in those matches, both series Whitewashes Vs SA & Pk would have been easily avoided with those miracle wins lonely attempted by Tharanga.

As evident, he even tried to revive a hopelessly dead side with some miracle individual performances, that even added to the world record books, in his brief 22 match tenure as skipper.

loosing 16/22 is his official record as skipper, loosing 16/20 is your interpretation counting only the matches completed. But the bitter reality is 8/16= 50% of losses under Upul were inevitable even played under any top class skipper in the world, leading such pathetic batting unit that couldn't put up 250 runs in a single match, even on 350 possible batting decks.

Cricket is a team game that any skipper cannot win without substantial contributions from others
