To pinpoint obvious discrepancies going on in Mother Lanka's cricket, does anyone have to be a supporter of a player?

To the Nose-length-focal visioned bandwagon surfing in these forums & decision makers with similar focus:

Why are you all blind to the reality questions asked by someone in pervious blog. It seems you all don't have answers to any of them or simply cannot comprehend even the basics of the game of cricket. Do you know, even the world's best international players cannot regain their full form or rhythm to deal with situations, without having a sufficient run of CONTINUOUS CHANCES to play some International Cricket? Then why are you expecting UT to be any different & do miracles in every seldom (once in a blue-moon) chance given?

He was axed from ODIs in July 2013. SL had played a total of FIFTY SIX (56) ODIs since then up to now. But Tharanga was given only 5 solitary ODIs (one or 2 at a time) scattered all over in 2014 & another 4 in 2015 with similar treatment, while others who replaced him were given 47 ODIs at a trot to put up miserable long strings of failures throughout, destabilizing the opening spot (except for 2 good innings recently in this year). Kusal 46 innings @ 25 Av & 20 x single digit scores lasted less than 10 balls, with 8 x DUCKS! Other opener Dimuth was no different, 15 Av with 2 x Ducks. Both of them got too many continuous ODIs to fail repeatedly. Can anyone deny this fact?

Now look at Opener Upul Tharanga's ODI stats during his most recent 4 year period, from July 2009 to Aug 2013, when he was unjustly dropped for longer than 2 years, basically NOT ALLOWING him any international exposure long enough to regain his full form:

Tell me which country would do this to a 28 year old player with following credentials, by virtually PAUSING his international career for longer than Two Years ?

UT's ODI record  from 2009 July to 2013 Aug (AXING point age was 28 yrs):

89 innings-  3,033 RUNS @ 37.44 AVERAGE - 76.96 STRIKE RATE - 7 x 100 -19 x 50

Before making utterly foolish comments, answer the above & following questions from (Test scenario as pointed out by another poster in pervious blog) to validate your rubbish talk.

1) Who helped SL to bring their LAST SUCCESS in a Test Series, with HIGHEST batting contributions (92 & 45) in the vital series decider, in Aug 2014 ? Which position did he bat to bring that success ?

2) Who is the world's first player to be DROPPED (unrelated to any injury) from the squad for the next Test Series, after putting up such an outstanding series winning performance in the previous Test (happened in SL's NZ Tour squad selections
in Dec 2014) ?

3) Why such a productive player's unjustified immediate layoff extended over 12 months, preferring all other ailing batters over him (Thirimanne, Dimuth, Silva & even 34 year old Mubarak & Kithuruwan in 2015) who never put up such a match-winning performance for the whole year 2014 or 2015 despite getting continuous (many more) chances, until the solitary Test this guy was given Vs Pk in June, 2015 ?

4) Who was the most consistent batter in the side (46 & a run-a-ball fluent 48) in that last Test Vs Pk played in June 2015 (batting @ number 3 & stemming the side from further erosion, despite first wicket fell under 15 runs, inside 7 overs in both innings, on a tricky deck in Kandy at Pallekale)?

Then they point-blankly dropped the most consistent player again for the FIRST TWO TESTS vs India, despite making another run-a-ball fluent 50 Vs India in the tour game, preferring the same bunch of ailing batters to put up another bout of failing performances resulting in toppling the Test series, as given below:

(1) Karunaratne 6 ings - 67 r @ 11 Av

(2) Silva 6 ings - 87 r @ 14.Av

(3) Thirimanne 6 ings - 142 r @ 23 Av

(4) Mubarak 4 ings -71 r @ 17 Av

The guy who had scored 92,45,46,48= 231 @ 58 Av in his last 4 Test innings was immediately subjected to another confidence-shattering 2 Tests layoff again without allowing him to play 2 consecutive matches, to regain his full flow or rhythm. Can anyone justify this treatment?

Conveniently Forgetting all this, why these people are picking only UT to blame for the 3rd Test debacle Vs India? Didn't they see how all other top order batters (in both teams) got out, unable to cope up with new ball in initial spells, on that one of a kind Green-topped suicidal deck never seen before in SL? Do you know 10 top-order wickets (including Indians) fell for just 53 runs, inside initial SEVEN overs in that Test? How often this could happen in a Test ? That itself explains the gravity of situation prevailed on that deck, in each inning new-ball initial spells!

Out of the blue, why did they ask continuously sidelined Tharanga to open on that deck (just after handing over another 2 match layoff since his solitary Test this year)?

Why did they hide regular opener Dimuth, who played 20+ continuous innings as Test opener since December 2014 up to then? In such a situation do you expect UT to do miracles? This shows the selective blindness of those criticizers !

To pinpoint the obvious discrepancies going on in mother Lanka, you don't have to be a supporter of any particular player or a group. People who see that reality, speak against misdoings to salvage our Cricket (now obviously going down the drain with seventh consecutive series defeat in all formats, as clearly predicted by some).

Give Upul Tharanga a FAIR window of opportunity with a few series in both formats to play continues run of matches (as offered to rest of all, even for repeated failures). Is this too much to ask?  Apart from above facts, criticizers conveniently ignore that he has 14 international hundreds, SL's 2nd fastest 5k+ runs & many SL/World records that none in the current bunch can even think of. These credentials are not easy-cake that anyone can achieve. For the sake of SL cricket, they should not destroy a rare assert like him, virtually by stalling his career! At least 7 years of future remains in him.

After giving him a substantial run in both formats only, they can decide his long term worthiness to the team.

There is no doubt, Tharanga is the most discriminated player in SL cricket, after Upul Chandana in the Nineties! Some mono-visioned ignorant people will continue to wag their tails for injustice, until SL's game of cricket will be completely wiped off from world map.

Spot on dude...UT deserves fair chance.... because ultimate failures got so many chances. because some blinders like statsguru, stromy, uppercut... etc hate this guy because their dream boy competing with UT FOR same spot most of the time... this guys says about the 2matches.. which kusal played brilliantly.. but they never talked about 40 odd ultimata failures....

Anonymous's picture

may be he deserve in test side but not as a opener, any way he is not suitable for odi's now, since he is not matchwinner in ODi's, specially dilshan lost his aggreveness and he is holding one end superbly as of now, we need destructive opener like kusal ,it doesnot matter how many times he failed,if he is click ,we will win the match, but tharanga scores century doesnot ensure a win in ODI's

@ MDK Julius Caesar, I can understand you are trying to promote your favorite player by fossil stats to show that he is a great player. Do you realize if he is such a good player he should be the first one to be picked and be a regular player. But he isn't. The reason everyone knows except people like you who keep pushing and putting out there so everyone take notice.

Do you realize we are getting sick of reading your same old arguments about Tharanga. Don't you get tired of this? Let it rest. No matter how hard you try Tharangas days are gone in my books. I hope selectors see it that way after his performance against India.
I wish you you could conserve your energy and concentrate on the younger players who are going to bring us the glory.

Doesn't matter what he did in the past... Don't yo know that cricket is about presnt not the past? What matters is his current form and the impact he is having on the team... It's nothing impressive and neither has he performed well in domestic matches recently... So why should he be slected NOW? Forget the past, UT is now an exposed player.... He never corrected his mistakes... He needs to dropped together with Thiri and Dimuth from ODI squd.. I do not mind him playing at number 3 in tests....

you can compare Tharanga with Thirimanne

Tharanga have played 22 matches and his average is 30.18 where Thiri has played 21 matches and his average is 25.07 (both are not up to test level)

Tharanga has 1 ton and 5 fifties where Thirimanne has 1 ton and 4 fifties. Both Tharanga and Thirimanne 100s came against Bangladesh.

Both of their carrier average would be below 20 had they not played against Bangladesh

Tharanga has played only at batting position 1,2 and 3 where Thirimanne has played 1 to 7.

Tharanga is not a technically corrected batsmen but Thirimanne's techniques are way ahead of UT.

Tharanga is 31 years and Thiri is 26 years old.

if one should be axed from these 2 then in my opinion it should be Tharanga due to various reasons as Tharanga is not technically competent enough to play for test cricket as a batsmen and he has never improved his techniques over the years, age gap also 5 years so it's not fair to drop Thiri over Tharanga. Thiri hasn't given consistent chance at up in the batting order where Tharanga has always played at 1,2 or 3.

Tharanga should get fair chance others got lot of chances.... I'm telling at least 3 test matches and 8 odi matches...... when tharanga scored century Sri Lanka never been lost in past... he is a good player who haven't luck on his side.....

As expected none of those nose-length mono-focal critics have NO ANSWERS to any of those crystal clear questions asked, related to the topic in my blog article! As expected, they all keep wagging their tails with rubbish, supporting the prime injustice of the decade in SL cricket.

No validation whatsoever to such brainless comments, without having answers to any of those questions!

I"m MOT GOING to WASTE MY TIME ON SUCH RUBBISH, WITH NO VALIDATION. Trying to convince those good for nothing surfers, is like trying to administer drugs to the dead :))

@cricexp :

You are missing the point here. The topic is about the discrepancy in treatment to an individual player, despite high productivity shown in both formats.

Since you have tried to compared Thiri with Tharanga, shortsightedly considering only their overall Averages , let me show you how they fared in Tests:

Thirimanne was given 12 CONSECUTIVE TESTS since June 2014 to August 2015

His 24 CONSECUTIVE innings yielded 427 runs @ 17.7 Average with 2 x 50 (62, 62)

Tharanga was given JUST 4 CONSECUTIVE TESTS since his come back after 8 year layoff in July/Aug 2014:

UT's 8 CONSECUTIVE innings innings in 2014, yielded 306 runs @ 38.3 Average! with 2 x 50 (92 Vs SA , 83 Vs Pk)

Before that, the ONLY TIME Tharanga was given some CONSECUTIVE TESTS was in 2006.

His 21 CONSECUTIVE innings innings in 2006, yielded 626 runs @ 31.3 Average with 1 x 100 & 3 x 50 (with a 52 @ Lord's Eng & 72 V Pk).

Isn't this far better than Thirimanne's current STRUGGLE in Tests (17.7 Average from 24 innings)? He keeps his place secure, despite failure after failure, thanks to double standard selectors.

Yet Tharanga was put on cold storage for straight 8 years, despite showing highest level of temperament even in shorter format, creating a World Record for Highest number of 200+ partnerships in ODIs.

Now look at UT's current form in Tests, where he was allowed just 4 CONSECUTIVE Tests in 2014:

UT's 8 CONSECUTIVE innings in 2014 yielded 306 runs @ 38.3 Average (with a series winning performance Vs Pk (highest contributor with 92,45 in the decider).

Thirimanne's 10 CONSECUTIVE innings in 2014 yielded pathetic 133 runs @ 13.3 Average!

SO HOW CAN YOU COMPARE THESE TWO PLAYERS in their PERFORMANCES & CONSISTENCY WISE? Tharanga is clearly in a different league, well above Thirmanne!

The bottom line is, Consistent RUNS ON THE BOARD for SL! That is what SL desperately need at the moment, in both formats!!

What's the use of so called TEXT BOOK Perfection in technique limited to pictures, if it CANNOT be applied for run-making or survival in the middle?

With all his so called technical flaws, Opener Upul Tharanga had managed SL's 2nd fastest 5,000+ & Fastest 1,000 runs in ODIs with 41 fifty plus (including 13 tons worldwide)

UT had won 11 MoM Awards for SL & his 13 x 100+ scores yielded 1,509 runs
@ 167.66 Av with a 88.24 Strike Rate, disproving some idiotic comment by someone at (#2)!

When Tharanga was axed from ODIs in 2013, he had scored 3,033 RUNS @ 37.44 AVERAGE - 76.96 STRIKE RATE - 7 x 100 -19 x 50 in most recent 4 yrs, up to then.

No answer to why such a player's (28 yrs) career was abruptly paused for 2 years virtually without any significant international exposure.. and now some idiotic pundits are trying to judge his current potential in ODIs, simply WITHOUT GIVING HIM any substantial window of OPPORTUNITY with a fair run of continuous ODIs to prove his worth.. !

Such Jokers can comment as they wish, but the bottom line is, 30 year old Tharanga is a long-term proven, rare assert among too many failures in current bunch, that dwindling SL cricket cannot afford to loose... WITHOUT GIVING HIM A FAIR OPPORTUNITY to play continuous matches in both formats (like rest of all had)!

NONE can decide his worthiness without that.

I am really tired of reading these comments. Let us not justify anybody. These so called experienced players (Thirimanne, Tharanga, Mubarak, Dimuth, Kithruwan) have disappointed cricket lovers. I can't understand why they are still kept in the team. I don't blame these players , but the selectors. They are just playing a game. Sorry for SLC. Just have a glance on the following:

First class domestic cricket,

Thirimanne ave. 40+ Roshen Silva Ave. 48+

Tharanga ave 36+ Anjelo Perera Ave. 42+

Mubarak ave. 38+ Romesh Budd.. Ave. 44+

why they can't see the difference and the talents. It is a mystery. Nobody can understand the logic behind the selection. Let us stop blaming players, and try to make the selectors realized their inability with regard to their responsibility. This is my personal opinion: These two Players, Roshen Silva, and Anjelo Perera, will carry the bat for Sri lanka for many years, if they are given the responsibility. Not only that one of the can be the deputy to Matthews in the future. hopefully the selectors will do justice to all these young talented players. Very best.

@ Yahapalanaya:

Hey! man why r u blabbering bull...t ?

what do u mean by "neither has he performed well in domestic matches recently..." ?

This man UT had performed well in premiere league FC

12 in / 523 runs / 43.58 av /1 ton / 2 fifties

17 in / 818 runs / 48.11 av 3 tons/ 2 fifties

2014 List A matches
10 in/ 350 runs/ 35.00 av / 81.96 SR/ 1 ton / 1 fifty

If u don't like him that's a different story... but don't blabber naked lies to fool others man! and u certainly seems to have noselength vision & selectively ignorant attitude towards facts, as said by the writer of this blog... not to notice upul's current form displayed in only few consecutive innings that he got to play in any format for 2 years, (in his comeback in Tests) with 39 average from 8 innings.. with a match winning contribution.

think twice, before blabbering unreal things.

Sir, take his whole domestic performance (First class average). Not from 2013 to 15. Please let me know. Everybody knows how incapable he is now. Promote cricket, not an individual. We have far better players than Tharanga. Remember this, I have nothing against any player, but never afraid of bringing out the truth. It is obvious that you are promoting him only. you are not a good fan of cricket, but a good friend of Upul. Learn how to love the game, and promote the good. thanks.
