Best possible Sri Lankan Squad to become No.1 Test Ranking Team-

1 .Kusal Mendis
2. Dimuth Karunaratne
3. Dhananjaya de Silva
4. Roshen Silva
5. Dinesh Chandimal(Captain)
6. Lahiru Milantha(Wk)
7. Akila Dananjaya
8. Dhamika Prasad
9. Suranga Lakmal(Vice-Captain)
10.Lakshan Sandakan
11.Rangana Herath

12. Tharindu Kaushal
13. Shehan Jayasuriya
14. Lahiru Kumara
15.Dasun Shanaka
Angelo Mathews is struggling with fitness and since he is the Limited over captain it`s only wise to think he should just play limited over cricket whoever disagrees is STUPID.

Reason-

  • Dilruwan Perera shouldn`t be even in Test Cricket. From March 2017 to February 2018 In 21 innings Dilruwan has taken 36 wickets for a bowling average of 50.05. Tharindu Kaushal should replace him as a bowler or if you want an All-Rounder than Shehan Jayasuriya.
  • Niroshan Dickwella is a rising star for Sri Lanka but he is struggling to find form since his attack nature is not fitting for Test Cricket resulting in a lot of low scores which effects his game in other formats of the game. Niroshan Dickwella is best in Limited Over cricket and in future can one day be the captain of the ODIs and T20s.
  • Lahiru Milantha has been a Young Roshen Sliva in the Domestic Arena and instead of wasting the years he could play like how Sri Lanka did with Roshen Sliva they should get him in the international arena.
  • Tharindu Kaushal is the deadliest bowler in Sri Lanka, he is similar to the great legend Muttiah Muralitharan and from seeing how the New head coach has severely improved Lakshan Sandakan and can expect the same thing with Tharindu.
  • Shehan Jayasuriya has been the perfect All-Rounder for the last few years he takes 5 wickets and makes 50s in every match nowadays.
  • Sri Lanka Selectors need to do these changes and let the New Head Coach work his magic on these proven talented players.
  • With Rangana Herath nearing his ultimate end in Cricket we really need to use talented players like Tharindu Kaushal and Lakshan Sandkan and gear them up for the post Rangana-Era instead of wasting time with Dilruwan Perera for just plain Experience than Talent.

No Mathews, No number 1

I dispute this. Where is Akila Dhananjaya in your team ? Shehan Jayasuriya is not a suitable player for test cricket by any means. I'm not sure for one dayers even. BTW 100% agree with Niroshan Dickwella's case.

You will need a bigger squad than that because it will take several series and a some time for that to happen and you need to cover for injuries, loss of form ect.
You remember when Dav Whatmore became coach the first time they set a target to win the WC and be #1 By the year 2000 but the latter never happened for various reasons. But its a target that is long term especially with SL having a considerable gap between them and India and South Africa at 1 and 2. So more players will be needed than that.

In addition to the players you need the board to be committed. Firstly in number of Tests and series played secondly with scheduling of overseas tours.
They ain't going to just rock up and win with one or two 2 day or 3 day warm up games against the stronger opposition.
You may get away with it in Asia (apart from India) or against weak opposition like Zimbabwe, and even the West Indies if you are lucky and they play poorly but not against stronger teams.

DK, KM, DdeS, and Roshen clearly strengthened Test format and in fact, one of these cornerstones should be the test-captain. Domestic arena top players, Lahiru Milantha and Shehan Jayasuriya should be tried out for next test format. Frankly, RH reached the final milestone and time to retire graciously and let Tharindu Kaushal and Pushpacumara to begin their national career. Both ND and Chandi deserve in test squad due wk role. Other batting spots should be picked only on current form. Improved fielding!

What is the go with Prasad these days? Are his days over? What a shame as he was just shaping up to be something good and appears he is gone.

I must agree if you want to be #1, you need 5 bowlers unless you have like a Kallis or Stokes or Sakib in the top order and not many have that luxury. Else you need 4 genuine wicket takers with guys like Warne and Mcgrath in the same side and not many have that luxury either. This is where India have turned up 2 genuine #7's in Pandya and Ashwin depending on the wicket. They could play both which gives the cushion to balance the team.

The thing is these are really rare talents and India and England are lucky to have two at the same time (Moin Ali is no mug these days). SL I don't think have even had this player with Anji coming the closest but his test bowling is average at best.

I am not Akila is even close to this but he does have some batting ability and he is only young. I thought Asela Gunaratne provided some decent spin options but untried in test as yet - what happened to this guy? Injured I take it?

The other very important cog in a winning team is a genuine new ball wicket taker. Lakmal is good these days but this guy has one five wicket haul and hasnt even come close to winning us a game. We need to develop Chameera and Kumara to be genuine fast bowlers. Again look at India these days - they have genuine decent fast bowlers. They didn't just fall from the sky but the BCCI called for seaming wickets a few years ago which even saw the dust bowl of Eden Gardens change to a seaming wicket. No surprises where all the fast and swing bowlers came but SLC needs to wake up and stop the looting for any of this to happen!

So how does SL become number one? (1) get rid of the thieves at SLC (2) get rid of the thieves at SLC (3) get rid of the thieves at SLC!
