Pallekele and Hambantota stadiums have no seats, Dandeniya?

DS de Silva, Suraj Dandeniya and Nishantha Ranatunga will have you think that Pallekele stadium and Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium in Hambantota was completed for the World Cup. But the new SLC Chairman Upali Dharmadasa says months after the end of the World Cup, seats are yet to be fully installed at both venues.

The former interim committee, along with the World Cup director Dandeniya pulled a fast one on the public by stripping the Dambulla stadium of its seats and placing them as needed at venues during World Cup matches because their incompetence led to the delay in seats arriving in time for the World Cup.

De Silva, Dandeniya and Ranatunga have also left SLC completely bankrupt because they over-spent on their budget during the World Cup. The lack of finances meant they were unable to clear the seats from the Ports Authority - they have been sitting since March at the Ports Authority.

This is what Dharmadasa told the Daily Mirror (1/8/2011):

"The previous Interim Committee has ordered these chairs but we didn't know about it until we get a debit note from Sri Lanka ports authority.

"It takes some time to clear these stuff from the port and our initial plan was to remove few number of seats from Dambulla Stadium on temporary basis and install them at Pallekele, until we get those chars cleared from the harbour. The biggest problem is we have no money to clear them.

"However, to prevent unwanted issues, I later spoke to Mr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama of Sri Lanka Ports Authority and [came] to an agreement that we get the three containers cleared from the harbour, on a bank guarantee.

"The former Interim committee did not clear the Cargo, and it had been lying in the Port for almost 5 months. SLC is now faced with a debit note of Rs. 4,279,393.00 being Ports demurred and shipping liner charges payable to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority as at 31 July 2011."

These guys have got away scot free with fraud. No body wants to make them explain or take them to courts. SL and international cricket fans should stay away from matches where SL plays until SLC and the ministers/authorities come out with an explanation why they dont take any action against these thieves. I for one will not buy a ticket until this happens.

I think we needed to take cricket to rural areas and I'd like to look at Hambanthota as a step towards that, but there's a lot to be done. Just building a stadium isn't going to get the job done.

The officials keep disappointing fans. If these people are not capable of handling jobs like these, why have they got the posts?

I just went you know that it is 40KM from Hambantota ? It is literally in the middle of nowhere !

There is nothing except a few Kade's selling Coke etc in the area.

The heat these days is also rather special, should be interesting for the Aussies coming from their winter.

Hope the issue is now settled with new seats released from the port and the initiatives taken by the SLC.
