Who should open batting for Sri Lanka at ICC Cricket World Cup 2019?

Sri Lankan selectors are currently going with Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga as the first choice opening pair but they always change players for this important position.

We may even see Dimuth Karunaratne opening in ODI matches. I won't be surprised if they have a totally different combination by the time of the World Cup.

Do you think Kusal Perera and Upul Tharanga will make a better combination? Kusal Perera can keep wickets as well. This will help bring in more options like another bowler or all rounder to the side.

What do you think about this?

It should be 1 Tharanga 2 Kusal 3 Mendis 4 Chandimal 5 DDS 6 Matthews 7 Shanaka 8 Thisara 9 Akila 10 Malinga 11 Chameera or Sandaken depend on the pitch. This is the perfect batting lineup where we can chase down any total easily. 1 2 3 should bat how they bat in Ongoing T20.If we lose them quickly it is up to chandimal,DDS & Matthews to drag the game to 35th over. Then shanaka, thisara & other not out batters should try to get 150 runs in last 15.

Selectors and the coach do not prefer Upul and Dikwella, Upul's current form will save him but Dikwella will face the axe at least in the Asia cup. Management prefer Dhanushka because of his bowling and fielding add more balance to the team.

Agreed with cricexp. Danushka and Tharanga are probably the best options given the form they are in. Dont see where Chandi fit in as well.

My preferred 11 is.

1. Danushka
2. Upul
3. Mendis/ Chandi
4. Kjp
5. Matthews
6. DDS
7. Shanaka
8. Thisara
9. A.Dananjaya
10. Lakmal /Malinga
11. Kumara/Rajitha

With the Asia cup squad, I will open with Danushka and Dhananjaya, both career openers with good hands and useful arms. Followed by the 2 Kusals and then Mathews and Shanaka with Tissera at 7 followed by 4 specialist bowlers.

Lets not mess around with Tharanga and Chandimal, a combnation that has got us no where in recent times. Lets go for an aggressive option that has a reasonable chance of chasing 300+ and most importantly, 4 specialist bowlers + Thissera to control the opposition batting.

Stormy- I am not sure if you are following SL cricket, Upul Tharanga is the most successful batsmen in last year with over 85 SR. I am not a UT fan and will support Dhanushka Gunathilaka over UT considering his bowling and fielding ability as that will balance the team very well, otherwise we don't have a bowling all-rounder untill 5-6 down which is very rare line up in SL cricket history. We always had Sanath,Aravinda,Dilshan etc with decent bowling options from start of SL cricket until Dilshan retired. Other thing is whether we like it or not Chandimal is going feature in the playing 11 in Asia cup. I think coach and the management want to change his game and convert him to a good ODI player.

Don't change Tharanga Danushka opening. If kjp can settle at 4 he can produce something like Morgan

Hopefully both openers will do well in England as they did before in separate occasions.

@ Nuwantha you are right. Tharanga should be the permanent choice to OPEN SL ODis/T20s in all matches leading up to World Cup in England.

Tharanga has the BEST EVER ODI batting record in Eng in history of SL cricket.! Even our EVER BEST Legend batter Kumar Sangakkara had managed only 976 runs @ 48.80 AV with 2 tons playing 2.5 times more innings than Tharanga in England's swing/seam Conditions.!

Sanga's record in England:

25 Odis - 976 runs @ 48.80 Av - 79.67 SR - 2 x 100 - 7 x 50+

Tharanga's record in England:

10 Odis - 500 runs @ 55.55 Av - 88.18 SR - 2 x 100 -3 x 50+
