Fine Tuning for Cape Town

There is little doubt that we will get a green top in Cape Town. Sometimes I wonder what the Match referee is there for ? They seem to have got all full of them selves with disciplining the players and forgotten their role to ensure fair playing conditions. If I am not mistaken it was the antics of the Pakistanis when playing at home during test matches (altering the wickets after the match started) that initiated the need for a match referee. I don't say a green top is unfair but leaving as much grass as was left in the 1st test was ludicrous.

Having said that if we rest on our laurels ( I still can't believe where that win came from !) we will get thrashed again and it will be back to square one.

A minor change in the batting order with Chandimal batting ahead of Mathews as Mathews has got most of his runs batting at 7 is pretty obvious I think.

The inclusion of another spinner causes more problems. Including another specialist spinner ( Mendis?) is the only hope we have of beating the Proteas again. The psychological advantage alone is worth the gamble.Who is the bowler we are going to "rest"? It has to be one of the quicks and this will mean that Mathews has to do a bit more bowling.

I would take a HUGE gamble and give Welagedera a rest. He went wicketless in the 2nd innings remember, he was very economical though but Mathews may be able to achieve that role. Surely the Proteas will work out how to play a left armer who has only the natural angle to work with and hasn't a delivery that comes into the right hander ?

The old adage of sticking with a winning combination etc is outdated in this day and age of computer analysis and highly paid coaching staff. Staff who are paid (hopefully) to use their brains and innovate. Innovation is the recipe for success and that has been proven.

It is a luxurious situation to be in to even consider the option of resting a bowler who has just taken a Michelle (5fer), but bold decisions of this nature is what wins matches and I hope the winds of change that have swept through our dressing room prevails.

We need to fine tune for Cape Town but I dont think Welegedara should be dropped or Chandimal bat ahead of Mathews.
Chandimal keeps wickets and should be fresh while coming out to bat,so lower down the order is fine for him.
As for including Mendis, it would be a big mistake.Yes, he is a spinner but he was very expensive during the warm up match and even before. With Dilhara and Perera(both of whom can be erratic), we need Welegedara and Herath to keep things tight.
Welegedara isnt a mystery bowler, he just used a tight line(and he does have the inswinger) to get wickets. No matter how much technology available, tight bowling and swing will get you wickets.
So SL should go with the same bowling attack, but they could bring in Dimuth or Thirimanne for Paranavitana.

Drop Chanka Wela.? What nonsense. Maybe Thisara but I think winning combination should play

bring in prasad for thisara perera and yes i too think chandimal should bat ahead of mathews and our openers are utter rubbish(including our captain). As he is the captain he wont drop himself so bring in thrimanne for parane

Depends on the nature of the track..if it looks like it'll spin id say we drop thisara and bring in mendis.Anyway i dnt know why Paranavithana is playing..I dnt mind a patient player but he is struggling to rotate the strike and puts pressure on the batsman at the other end.

there you go again WANK ! This is simply a discussion why do you have to use words like nonsense ?

Thanks to the others for your thoughts ! The idea is to have a discussion and throw some idea (some crazy ones too) in the air and see what the concensus is.

When people reply in abusive or dismissive terms what are they trying to achieve ? Simply discourage anyone who bothers to post ?

I really feel that the moderators should look at this aspect if they wish to keep even the handful of posters who participate, around.

Ravana I like reading your posts. Just some advice dont be so sensitive. I understand your point but you cant expect them to remove every comment that disagrees with you or is negative to your writing? You wont be able to comment anywhere on a public forum without people criticising you? So dont be so sensitive mate.

Most lankans dont think out side the box, but if there is a change, drop Paranavitana for Lahiru and Mendis for Thisara.

The thing is, we can't complain that conditions aren't fair because when teams from outside the sub-continent tour SL we give them spinner-friendly tracks to play on. It works both ways, yeah?

Thisara's batting has been a huge disappointment. They way he deals with the short ball, he should be batting at ten or playing as a bowler only.
