Sanga hoping to do a Jayasuriya

When Mahela took over from Marvan as captain and Sangakkara was his deputy, the pair were determined to infuse youth into the side and show the door to the seniors. Mahela was only handed captaincy because Marvan was injured but after Marvan recovered he found it tough to even get a game. Remember the 2007 World Cup?

Jayasuriya too faced similiar issues. He had to use other means to get selected and find his way back into the team and he performed remarkably well in England in 2006 and in the Asia Cup in 2008. With his swashbuckling century, Jayasuriya was a major factor for Sri Lanka's 2008 Asia Cup final win and he was 39 at the time.

It was apparent to most fans that both Sangakkara and Mahela felt that Marvan (was 37 before being shown the door) and Jayasuriya, who was also close to his 37th birthday around the time he was struggling to find a place in the team (recall the 2006 tour to England), were too old.

But Sangakkara says he hopes to play until the 2015 World Cup. He will be 38.

... I don’t know whether I will get a chance to win a World Cup now. However, assuming I am still playing well enough to be selected, I do believe that we can win the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh in 2014 or the 2015 World Cup in Australia.

Oh, the hypocrisy!

Dilshan, Mahela and Sangakkara are hogging three vital batting positions in ODIs and T20s and are preventing youngsters from gaining valuable experience for when they retire, which should ideally be within the next two years — not 2015.

Sri Lanka must allow young players, like India did with Kohli, more opportunities to bat up the order.

Jayasuriya came under a lot of criticism for playing well into his late 30s. Don't you think if Sangakkara, Dilshan or Mahela take the same path that they too should face the same criticism?

Sanga and Dilshan definitely need to quit T20's but so long as they are performing in ODI's I see no problem in them keeping their place even until the 2015 World Cup.
For T20's we have ideal replacements in Chandimal and Munaweera, the rest of the T20 team is almost settled. Mahela should hold his place as opener as he could play a role as a senior in the team at least until the 2014 T20 World Cup.
In ODI's though, our team isnt settled. Jeevan,Thirimanne havent performed consistently enough to be guaranteed a place and with Tharanga in woeful form it would be stupid to drop Sanga/Dilshan.

Without these three players i doubt we'll even get through the group stages in the world cup. The reason why jayasuriya came under attack is because he used political advantages to come back(no disrespect to him).

As long as they keep performing, they can keep playing well into their fifties.. but if they can't perform, then they should bow out.

I guess the problem lies in the sri lankan selectors. For eg: in the new zealand series i dont understand why dilshan, sanga and mahela were even picked. they could have rested them and played with youngsters like chandimal and munaweera. even malinga should have been rested and eranga should get some games. even dananjaya is not getting a chance.

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan :D
u better brace urself for barrage of mudslinging from 'sanga fans' bro. And that will include calling u a 'pro government henchman' a 'blind jayasuriya fan' :D)

i was going to blog on the same topic, but u beat me to it :) anyway u have pretty much said everything.

Sanga once said on a cricinfo interview that he wud retire after 10000 test runs and 30 test centuries. That last T20WC was really the big 3's last chance. That's why i said that all 3 of them shud retire from T20 and let the young guys do the job, building up to the ODI team! Then the 'ilovesanga' club got all fired up and said it was a 'knee jerk' reaction!

If he plays at 39 in 2015 WC that's pure HIPOCRACY on his part! But i won't be suprised. He did a similar thing in his Cowdrey Lecture. IT WAS A VERY ELOQUENT,AWESOME SPEECH no doubt, but he was criticising 'others' for MONEY-TISING cricket while he himself refused to cut-short the IPL and arrived just 5 days before the 1st test!

so whats wrong ? Unlike Jaya Sanga is scoring runs..and he is ICC`s world no 1 Test batsman..ANd in Australian pitches he is also the no 1 ODI batter. But that doesnt mean we should give chances to youngsters..but I would defa wanna see Sanga , Dili and Mahela playing 2015 WC..all of them are fit as anyone in world cricket

Couldn't AGREE more ! The hypocrisy and the smooth talk of Sanga and Mahela doesn't ring true with anyone who can see through it.

However remember the people of this Country live for "thousand Talks" and fall for it in every sphere of life !

Brian Lara can still play but he is not. I know he also retired at 38 which is too old in my book.

sanga has just won 3 ICC awards last yr. So the part of kicking him out of the team seems unreasonable. however SLC can rest some players for unimportant series like the NZ one going on.

@arjun, Jayasuriya was also in reasonable form(century at the age of 39 and 99 runs in a later game) when he was given the 'eviction notice'!!! (Dropping him for 2011 WC was fair enough at 41) and not to mention Atapattu was dropped without any consideration of 'form'

only reason given for dropping both of them was 'giving opportunities to youngsters' which is a valid reason for present team too.

I don't have a problem Sanga, Mahela and Dilshan playing another year or so, but they definitely shouldn't be playing in 2015 WC!
