Dilshan case: SLC clarifies issuing press release

In the past few days I've come across many forums which have been posting gossip about Tillakaratne Dilshan and three other players of our team involved in a misbehaviour incident while touring Zimbabwe this June. There were also rumours that Dilshan has been banned from entering Zimbabwe in future.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that unofficial reports from the Sri Lankan government state that, the Sri Lankan President had been aware of the incident from top to bottom.

This rumour has been spreading like a virus all over the internet for the last two days.

Noticing that this is getting out of control, Sri Lanka Cricket has today issued a press release regarding the matter.

"It is with deep regret that we note certain media organizations have been misleading the public by accusing some of our players of misbehavior, during the recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe. As a responsible administrative body of Sri Lanka Cricket, we would like to state, that we do not take disciplinary action against players based on baseless allegations that are vindictive with an objective of character assassination of individuals.

Tillakaratne Dilshan : Often in trouble. AFP PHOTO/Lakruwan WANNIARACHCHI.We assure all of you that appropriate action will be taken against any player no matter if he is a senior or a junior, if they are found guilty after a proper inquiry.

Proper inquiries will be conducted for all official complains or accusations that are brought against any player be it at home or on overseas tours.

We shall greatly appreciate if you could give us the due publicity for this statement since we stand to be accused of not taking any action against our players on disciplinary grounds.

We wish to convey our disappointment that in view of World Cup 2011 and forthcoming bilateral series only such baseless stories are given prominence in some media which would be detrimental to players and the country

Thank you, for your co-operation, and support for our sport."

I hope these web portals show some responsibility before making baseless allegations in future and stop being a headache to the players as well as their fans. Let the allegations be made, provided with sufficient evidence.

Thanks for posting bro,Its about time SLC clarified this, its not healthy when reports like this compromising a players character and integrity are freely floating around unchallenged.I wish media outlets would be more responsible in dealing with malicious rumours concerning player-I don't mind what they write about administrators or selectors but they should be very careful when dealing with news about players

I've replied to that link. I wasn't accusing them of anything in particular. The following is my personal opinion and not of Island Cricket.

Another shitty baseless Indian media's conspiracy to bash our star players. I'm wondering who'll be the next. It's good that SLC has clarified it's stance. I'm wondering who'll be the next.

Hey Wicket Keeper, What are the proofs they've got? Only an allegation to destroy Dilshan's image. First it's Chesterfield who started the relay, now these Indian b*******'s had taken the battle from him and started to run.

SLC board has not clarified the accusation. THEY ARE ONLY BEATING ABOUT THE BUSH. Let us have the truth.

This is what Sa'adi Thawfeeq wrote in his column today.

"They [SLC] have already made a mountain out of a molehill over the Zimbabwe issue. Instead of nipping it in the bud at that time, they tried to shove it under the carpet hoping it would go away, but now find themselves on a sticky wicket. By trying to cover up issues without taking the proper course of action on time they have allowed interested parties to cash in and blow the issues out of proportion for their advantage. This is something Sri Lanka Cricket has to take responsibility for."

@Radcliffe,

Yes. It also proves that an incident took place in Zimbabwe. There are some folks who are pretending that this "incident" is all concocted.

Nevertheless, I really hope these allegations wouldn't hamper our journey to world cup. I do not want that to happen at any case. Dilshan is our primary weapon!
