Malcolm Marshall or Imran

Malcolm Marshall or Imran Khan are ones that immediately pop into my head after a quick glance of the list.

Really most of the top players and ones that survived along time can and should know how. They can't survive that long otherwise unless its a struggling team and no alternatives. Occasionally a player might have a bad tour/series or a poorer record against one opposition or in one country as opposed to their overall status.
Even from this list do you remember Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist struggling in India early on?

Even with this South African side, Hashim Amla has had a shocking series, his last series in India just as appalling. But his previous Test series in Sri Lanka was decent and his previous one in India excellent.

There is a variety of reasons for failure. Inadequate tour games before and in between Test matches is the main reason. Tours are just made short and with bare minimum games. a 2 day game or 3 day game involving 13 or 14 members of the squad is inadequate. It's no different to a squad training session in the middle of the ground as opposed to in the nets!

The tours to UK and Australia used to be long but gave touring sides chance. Australia cos they had crazy schedules mixing up tests and ODIs in between which i get is hard for players especially now with distinct separate squads for different formats and UK cos England used to offer their counties financial incentives each summer to knock off a international side by means of ensuring they place quality opposition against touring sides and not rest their stars. But with so many counties to make it fair they had to play so many tour games.

Sri Lanka won the 1 off test at the Oval comprehensively in 1998 do you recall how many tour games were played for this single test match include one game where SL was allout for 50 odd or somelow total like that!
