CRICKET is facing a bizarre threat from European Union meddling as new laws could lead to a world shortage of bats.

Angry businessmen say the cricket-bat manufacturing industry could collapse within weeks plunging the sport itself into chaos.

The crisis follows an EU directive outlawing a vital chemical used to treat willow – the wood from which bats are made – before export.

This is bizarre all right! But if this chemical is threatening the ozone layer, cricket doesnt compare! Right??
