UGTHORPE cricketers are bowled over by a new addition to their side – Sri Lankan Mahesh Rajaratne. The 27-year-old is taking the local leagues by storm and has proved a real hit with his team-mates since he arrived in the area back in April in the early stages of the season.

Already, Rajaratne has hit back-to-back hundreds – 101 against Fryup and 188 not out against Glaisdale – which smashed the club record.

He also hit 16 sixes and is proving popular with his team mates who are enjoying playing with a cricketer who back in his home country plays at county level.

"This is a new experience for me," he told the Whitby Gazette.

Whitby is a whole world away from his life in Sri Lanka where it is now winter time.

"It's cold here," he said despite the current heatwave. "I've been wearing my coat.

"It's very nice here. I went to London but Whitby is totally different. It feels like England.

"I've eaten a Yorkshire pudding – it's like a pancake and I've tried fish and chips and kippers, they were nice."

His team-mate Richie Parkin (24), who's in his second season with the club, said Rajaratne is simply an outstanding player.
