by Revata S.Silva of The Island

As Tier ‘B’ is about to play its semi-final round, Tier ‘A’ of this year’s Premier One-day tournament, organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, is to continue today with five more matches to be played at five venues in Colombo.

The Tier ‘A,’ which began on November 9 last year with the participation of 11 teams, will be over in three more weeks. The next remaining rounds are set to be worked off on Jan. 28, Feb. 5 and 11.

Tier ‘B’ semi-finals delayed

Meanwhile, the semi-final stage of Tier ‘B’ is yet to be held, following the tournament’s first round finish on Jan. 14. Due to a calculation mishap, as it was reported, the fourth Tier ‘B’ qualifier for the semi-finals is yet to be confirmed by the SLC and as a result, the three other semi-final entrants, Police SC, Seeduwa – Raddoluwa CC and Sebastianites C&AC will have to wait till one from either Panadura SC or Lankan CC is picked by the organisers to join three present semi-finalists.

Tier ‘A’ fixtures to be played today (21):

SSC vs Moors SC at SSC

Tamil Union vs Chilaw Marians CC at P. Sara

Ragama CC vs CCC at CCC

Bloomfield vs Colts CC at Bloomfield

NCC vs Army SC at NCC.

Premier League Cricket 2008-09 winds up this weekend

Premier League Cricket 2008-09

This season’s prime domestic 1st Class cricket tournament, the Premier League (Tier ‘A’) organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, will come to an end this weekend as six teams out of the 11 participating clubs will begin their final encounters at venues in both Colombo and at Panagoda today (30).

Three matches held from Jan. 30 - Feb. 1:

Colts CC vs Badureliya CC at Colts

NCC vs Ragama CC at NCC

Army SC vs Bloomfield

at Panagoda

The tournament which began on November 14 last year was held through 11 weekends.

The 11 participating Tier ‘A’ clubs this year were:

Singhalese SC, Moors SC, Tamil Union C&AC, Colombo CC, Chilaw Marians CC, Colts CC, Ragama CC, Bloomfield C&AC, Nondescripts CC, Army SC and Badureliya CC.

Out of the five teams that have completed their 10 matches, SSC, the fancied defending champions which annually feature top national players as a tradition, are leading the 2008-09 points table with 110.90 points. But Colts CC, who will play their final game from today against a modest Badureliya side, are trailing SSC closely having 107.12 points in nine encounters. According to SLC, a first innings win in this weekend’s encounter will suffice Colts and they would then surpass strong SSC to topple their crown this year.

Five other clubs, CCC, Tamil Union, Moors SC and Chilaw Marians CC, have already completed their full quota of ten ties and are with either 80 points or below, behind Ragama SC, who hold the present third place with 91.70 points.

Tier ‘B’ scenario

Meanwhile, Saracens SC enjoy the first place in Tier ‘B’ this season with only a single match to be played in their segment.

After their full quota of nine encounters, Saracens now hold the first spot with 113.51 points over Panadura SC who enjoy the second place with 97.62.

But Panadura have one match to go that will be against Sebastianites C&AC, the last in the list of 10 clubs in Tier ‘B,’ and an outright win there for Panadura would earn them a possible first place this season. Seeduwa – Raddoluwa CC are in the third slot at present after completing their nine games to record 94.74 points.
