Premier One-day Cricket 2008-09 Tier ‘B’ last round today

The last of the nine weeks of this season’s Tier ‘B’ Premier One-day Tournament, which began Nov. 19 last year, will be held today at five different venues in Colombo and at Katunayake, Panadura and Moratuwa.

After seven rounds, Sebastianites C&AC (with 26 points), Seeduwa Raddoluwa CC (21), Police SC (21), Lankan CC (20) and Panadura SC (20) were leading the points table out of ten participating teams. The top four after today’s matches will qualify for the semi-finals. The dates and venues for the semis are yet to be finalised by the organisers of the tournament, Sri Lanka Cricket.

Meanwhile, Tier ‘A’ will enter its ninth week today. With four more weeks to go before its semi-finals, a heated competition is expected in the final stages of this 11-team segment.

Ragama prevail in a thriller - Malinga scalps 5 for 56

A knock of 107 with 11 boundaries by Colts player Ishan Muthaliph was in vain as it could not prevent Ragama CC from recording a thrilling two wicket win over fancied Colts in their Premier Tier ‘A’ limited over cricket encounter played at the Colts ground yesterday.

Ragama chasing 224 for victory came back when they were struggling on 19 for 5 and were propelled by half tons from Kaushalya Weeraratne (63) and Lahiru Thirimanne (53) with support coming from Saliya Saman.

Two useful partnerships one by Lahiru Thirimanne and Duminda Perera for the sixth wicket which yielded 60 runs and the other a 93 stand for the eighth wicket between Kaushalya Weeraratne and Saliya Saman saw them reach the target with seven balls remaining.

A fine all round performance from Saliya Saman helped Ragama CC pull off a thrilling two wicket upset victory over Colts CC in their SLC Premier limited over cricket tournament Tier A match worked off at Havelock Park yesterday.

Saliya Saman claimed two wickets for 23 to restrict Colts CC to 223 runs and then followed up with an unbeaten knock of 46 as Ragama CC reached their target with seven deliveries to spare. He also put on 93 runs for the eighth wicket along with Kaushalya Weeraratne who hit a top score of 67.

Himesh’s hat-trick ruins Tamil Union

The five Premier Tier ‘A’ limited over matches which ended yesterday saw some upset wins with fancied teams Bloomfield and SSC losing their games to Colts and Moors while the battle between the top two teams Tamil Union and Chilaw Marians ended in a win for the latter.

The other two matches were of less significance as they have remote chances of making it to the final.

Chilaw Marians right arm paceman Himesh Silva’s hat-trick ruined Tamil Union’s chance of a victory in the Premier Tier ‘A’ limited over cricket encounter played at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

Tamil Union chasing 278 for victory were well placed with the score on 256 for 7 with seven overs remaining before Himesh wrapped up the tail with a hat-trick.

Earlier in the day half tons by Amal Athulathmudali, Mahela Udawatte and Nimesh Perera senior saw Chilaw Marians end their innings making an imposing 277 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs.

NCC-Tamil Union clash for final berth

Tamil Union will take on NCC in the second semifinal of the SLC Premier limited overs tournament at the SSC grounds in Maitland Place today

The winners of this game will qualify to play Bloomfield who have already made it to the final of the tournament which is scheduled for March 4 at the NCC grounds in Maitland Place.

Tamil Union had a successful tournament and were placed second in the final points table with a total of seven victories to their credit. NCC were placed fourth in the points table having notched up six victories.

This match is of great importance for both teams as they will be determined to make amends following a poor season in the SLC Premier League championship.
