Still there for both teams with India the happier

It was a perfect plan. India won the toss and chose to bat and were 12/2 inside the first hour. Chameera created the opportunity, Muba dropped it, Rahul made a 100 and that was the end of that! SL still in it with India 6 down but need to limit the damage in the morning.

Dhamika continues to impress and keeps getting early wickets and what a vital wicket by Anji at the end of the day. Cant expect much from the spinners on this first day wicket but SL must get in to the game early tomorrow.

India ahead

Vital 80 odd runs this morning for India and lucky with some of the calls too. SL still 250 behind and a couple of wickets away from the tail being exposed. I reckon even if SL bat the whole day tomorrow, it will be around India's total which is the call of the day for tomorrow - resposible batting and 2 of the next 4 need to make meanigfull scores. Kaushal and Sanga both get going and but neither made it count.

Perfect scenario for Thiri to come to the party and make a difference and looking for these two to build a huge partnership tomorrow.

Won a battle but losing the war

SL did really well in the morning session but gave it away too easily in the next to have India bossing the game. Once again when the opportunity came along to do something meaningful (by not losing a wickets in the first session) SL played a tri of poor weak shots to give away the advantage. Surviving the second new ball was the defining moment of the game but SL lost 4 wickets to it and with it any chance in the game.

What was dissappointing was failing to understand the moment but playing lose shots. Thiri was stonewalling from yesterday and the second new ball come's along and suddenly he wants to play an expansive cover driver! Advantage lost. Chandi showed poor technique, pushing away from the body to a harmless delivery outside off - both should have left those deliveries along and so should have Anji. The poke Anji played to Binny was horrible despite getting an awesome hundred.

Strangely Anji looked safe as a house till he got in to the 90's when he suddenly hit a panic button. Nearlly got in to a run out and then nearlly caught by insisting on pushing in to a gap. When the reverse sweep shot came out to reach the 100, it was apparent the man was battling the demons which resulted in a tame poke at a harmless delivery.

So within a space of say 1 hour, when we should have got in to a position to take aim at the Indian total, we gave it all away and now looks like waiting for the inevitable Indian decleration. I reckon 250 is the most SL could chase but on a 5th day wicket may be even less. Short of another Galle like miracle or rain, looking at a loss here.

DRS Please...

Unavailability of DRS is a big issue in this test series. Actually ICC must make the DRS compulsory for every match/series. However, Indians don't like DRS because they cannot cheat when DRS is available.

Today also few umpire decisions went on India's favour. Thirimanne's out was doubtful. Few appeals by Herath & Kaushal in the Indian second inning were also very close, but not given.

If DRS was available, this match would have been in a different situation at the end of third day.

Sanga just wasted his last 4

Sanga just wasted his last 4 innings and dropped to the 4th place in all time best average list. He should have finished above Sobers at 3rd place if he managed to score 223 odd runs in these last 4 innings but he couldn't. Now SL too is sliding towards another defeat in Sanaga's next farewell game. Once Mathews and Karunarathna and I have no faith that Thiri, Muba and co could hold it together when Mathews and Dimuth falls. Really sloppy batting line up we have.

Lack of a wicket taking fast bowler

I think SL hardly missed Pradeep in this 2nd test match. His replacement Chameera could not deliver what is expected from him. It seems like he just runs and delivers at pace. No consistency, No line & length. Lots of deliveries were misfired & rarely he delivered a wicket taking bowl. Actually Indians targeted him in the second inning.

When considering about Pradeep, he used to bowl consistent line & length at pace. In some occasions he was equally threatening like Prasad in the first test.

Time for the rain dance

Where is the rain when you need it and it play a vital role in the series by showing up tomorrow. India done the job today in perfect fashion and SL bowling lacked depth to make an impression on the game. The only way out for SL was to bowl out India cheaply but India were too good. The 80odd India added on the second morning is now the pivotlal difference in the game as this wicket is a 300 wicket and the 390 India got is huge int he context and the game.

Dissappointed with Kaushal - two awfully poor shots in both innings. The second innings dismissal to a full toss in a classic sign of a defensive mind-set. Sanga has been haunted by Ashwin all series and again another beauty which one would expect Sanga to negotiate but was not in the grove to negotiate it.

SL are awfull in 4th innings regardless of chasing or defending. The only question is can SL force a draw and it will be up to Anji to bat the whole day with who ever else is able to survive but not holding out much hope.
