Tharanga scores way too slow

Tharanga scores way too slow but is a good option if Dilshan gets going. If Dilshan is out then Mahela must come at three. If Tharanga is out early then Sanga can come at his usual position . Our fellows are not using their brains.

That is lack of future

That is lack of future thinking... shouldn't We build young openers for next worldcup ? by giving chances for seniors to use the powerplays to boost their avg doesnt mean anything good.. If his opening avg around 60 ,and still his overall avg is 32 means, u cn imagin how poor his no 4 position avg. is.

Is this Mahela's average and

Is this Mahela's average and aggrigate so important to SL? How many matches had he won for us? Find some one like Sanath Jajasuriya who can win a match for us, without wasting future of SL cricket and young talented players.

Can't the people get it. One

Can't the people get it. One of the biggest reasons why Sri Lanka lost the World Cup Final was this ball eating/power play killing opening partnership of Dilshan & Tharanga's.

I mean what more better examples you want than a WC final to understand to stop this pathetic partnership from happening again & again.

Dilshan & Thranga combination is not the right opening partnership for SL in ODIs.

And Mahela has clearly

And Mahela has clearly suggested that he likes to open in ODIs too. Since he's keen to open the batting and he has a proven record as an opener, I don't see any reason why SL shouldn't allow classy Mahela to play as a match winner for SL.

Yeah, when Mahela opens the batting he can single handly guide SL for for victory. In General, Mahela is much better match winner when he opens the batting (Mahela can play the role Mark Waugh did for Australia when he moved up as an opening batsman). In that way SL side also gains a another match winner.

Statistics

Statistics only 9 matches in one instance and 19 in the other ! How easy is it to have a good average when the number of matches is so little ?

Have you guys forgotten that Mahela has a weakness outside the off stump when the ball is new and against quality fast bowling. How he got out of it in England was to play inside out drives against anything on or about that area and hit it over the extra cover fielder. Pakistan will put a sweeper three quarter of the way down and between that fielder and Umar Gul they will get him every time.

I agree with SF.In that case Chandimal and Dilshan and second reason for that is that a left hand right hand combination is also continued !

The third reason is that it is our middle order that is weak and that is where we need the experienced players to do the hard work.

Either he should bat at no4 and captain the ODI team or he should retire !

Have you also forgotten that

Have you also forgotten that when Mahela opened the batting in England, Mahela single handily carried Sri Lanka to victory. What happened to the so called "weakness outside the off stump" when he opened the batting? Why did he score runs against the fast bowlers when he opened the batting?

Also have you forgotten our sexy edge Mr. Upul Tharanga? Tharanga edges the bowl outside off stump than any other opening batsmen out there. So your argument is not valid. take it back please.

Mahela & Dilshan is the best option as operners

Since Dilshan & Tharanga partnership has not worked for Sri Lanka, another option is to try Tharanga & Mahela opening partnership.

Problem is it is difficult to move down Dilshan down. Because, eversince Dilshan started opening the batting Dilshan has been a totally different batsman altogether.

Therefore, at the end of the day, best option would be to move down Tharanga to the middle order (to play a Hashan Tillakertne role) with the new cricket rules, & try out Mahela & Dilshan as opening batsman. In that way I strongly believe SL will not have openers that waste all important power plays/ball eaters at the top of the order.
