Omitting Danushka Gunathilaka

PS: It's sad that Danushka Gunathilaka is missing out. He can be a handy part time bowler as well. Both Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka are aggressive openers but none of them is very consistent. Therefore, I thought only one of them can make it to the final 15 as there are limited available slots . Niroshan Dickwella got the edge considering his excellent wicket keeping.

Kusal Mendis is already in

Kusal Mendis is already in above squad. I just included Asela Gunaratne in the first 11 as Asela provides an additional bowling option. However, Kusal Mendis can replace Dickwella or Tharanga or Asela Gunaratne in the above first 11.

My squad for 2019 WC

1) Danushka Gunathilake
2) Kusal Perera
3) Dinesh Chandimal(wk)
4) Dhanajaya De Silva
5) Angelo Mathews(c)
6) Asela Gunarathne
7) Thisara Perera
8) Dasun Shanaka
9) Akila Dhananjaya
10)Suranga Lakmal
11)Lahiru Kumara

12)Niroshan Dickwella/Kusal Mendis
13)Jeffery Vandersay/Malinda Pushpakumara
14)Lasith Malinga/Nuwan Kulasekara
15)Isuru Udana

*Danushka will replace UT simply because WC is in England (there will be early swing for the pacers and we all know UT's weakness) plus Dhanushka is a far better fielder than UT.( Hopefully he'll stay away from night clubs for the team's sake :p)
* we need a solid number 03 who can bat at least 25-30 overs with an SR of 80-85 so that other stroke makers can play around him (i'm going with chandimal)
* Dhananjaya and asela swap places ( dhananjaya's talent will be wasted at no 06)
*Lahiru Kumara is the only doubt for me as he's not ready for limited over cricket yet(just raw pace), on the other hand without him this pace attack looks one dimensional.
*Isuru Udana deserves a place in the squad since he is one of the finest death bowlers in the current local circuit.
**** death bowling will be a huge issue for us even this squad consists the likes of malinga/Nuwan,thisara and isuru udana :(

RE:My squad for 2019 WC

Tharanga has a weakness of edging to the keeper and slips. His fielding is also a concern.
However, see Tharanga's ODI record in England below from cricinfo (

Matches -> 11 Innings -> 10 Runs ->500 HS->120 Ave->55.55 SR -> 88.18 100 -> 2 50->3

His batting record in England is not bad at all. Moreover, apart from Mathews and possibly Chandimal we don't have many experienced players in our squad. Therefore, Tharanga has a good chance of making it to the final 15 unless his batting form is terrible before the world cup. I would also like to include Danushka Gunathilake in the squad but there is no batsman to exclude.

As you have suggested Isuru Udana can be a good death bowling option but he needs to show more promising performances in international level to justify his inclusion. As Dananjaya de Silva's bowling is better than a part timer I'm not sure if a 2nd specialist spinner gets a chance to play unless Akila Danajaya is rested. Therefore it's better to include both Kusal Mendis and Dickwella in the squad instead of a 2nd spinner. Moreover, we need great fielders as 12th/13th man as current SL bowlers are not that great fielders.

I still wish that Lasith Malinga can bounce back with great performances to make it to the world cup. However, I doubt Kulasekara's chances. Lakmal can be an automatic choice. It will be a contest between Malinga, Lahiru Kumara, Pradeep, Shehan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha and Isuru Udana to fill remaining 3 fast bowlers' slots.

My team for 2019 world cup

Dickwella / Kusal Perera
Kusal Mendis
Chandimal / Tharanga
Asela / Dhananjaya

15th player - Lahiru Kumara

This is the best team we can have for 2019 WC.

We should play 3 specialist bowlers and 3 allrounders (Thissara/Shanaka/Asela)

something to work with

Like the idea here but we need to move on from Tharanga and play Mendis as the top of the order. Also I am not sure if Asela is ready but agreed, we do need a "Asela" like player and if he is fit, lets get him in now.

Its very deciding in deciding

Its very difficult in deciding the first 4 batsmen in this team because there is just too many options: Tharanga, Dickwella, Gunathilaka, De Silva, Mendis, Chandimal, Kusal, Gunaratne... The list goes on... Unfortunately not everyone of these players are going to find a place in the starting XI and we just have to except that.
In terms of our openers, I'm currently not too impressed with either Dickwella and Tharanga. I know their potential very well but I'm not seeing consistency, especially with Tharanga which is sad to see. For my openers I definitely want a left hand-right hand combination such as Gunathilaka and Mendis. I think both will be good openers and I remember well their performance in England playing India in the champions trophy. Our number 3 is a difficult choice; we have Chandimal, Kusal Perera, de Silva. For me, this position goes to our wicketkeeper, so either Kusal or Chandi. Number 4 MUST be Mathews! He is the brick wall when it comes to a Sri Lankan batting collapse so it would be better if he his at the crease earlier on. The rest of the players are not that difficult to choose apart from our fast bowler to bowl alongside Lakmal. I'm not too impressed with our young fast bowlers at the moment such as Lahiru Kumara and I will definitely choose an experienced player for the world cup, and the only experienced fast bowler with the best chances are Nuwan Pradeep and Lasith Malinga.

Dhanushka Gunathilaka
Kusal Mendis
Kusal Perera / Dinesh Chandimal (wk)
Angelo Mathews
Dhananjaya de Silva
Asela Gunaratne
Thisara Perera
Dasun Shanaka
Akila Dananjaya
Suranga Lakmal
Lasith Malinga / Nuwan Pradeep

I know there will be some complaints about Dhananjaya de Silva and Asela Gunaratnes position because they are batting quite low and would be "wasted potential". However I feel this team has been seriously lacking a late order batsman that is reliable in keeping their wicket and preventing a batting collapse. We have all seen too many instances where after Mathews goes out, the rest of the batsmen falls within 10 overs. Dhananjaya is the type of batsman to shine in these circumstances just like his recent 84 against SA. Gunaratne is also a solid batsman and a potential finisher for the side.
I think this team is one of the best options for the world cup as the batting runs deep (even Akila can bat) and there is planty of bowlers. Lakmal, Malinga, Shanaka, and Perera is enough seam bowlers when playing in England. We also have pur mystery spinner in Akila, and other part time spinners with de Silva and Gunaratne.
