Ethnicity has always been a point of discussion in cricket. Whether it be England’s strategy of surrogate citizenship or blacks playing for South Africa or even the recent hue and cry regarding Parvez Rasool becoming the first player from Kashmir to play for India, the “odd one out” is more often than not a talking point. Which is why it is surprising that no one has gone into an in-depth discussion regarding the Tamils to have played cricket for Sri Lanka given the violent civil war that raged in the country for two decades and, from time to time, even affected the game of cricket on the island. There is no doubt who the most famous name on that list is but, apart from that, there are a few others who have impacted the way the game has been played in the country over the years.

I think the writer missed

I think the writer missed another valid point , there's a cricket club called "tamil union" in the domestic cricket too , one of the oldest cricket clubs in Sri Lakan cricket . i dunno how many other countries have a club like that .. we can imagine what will happened in other countries if there was a club called " Muslim union " or something :P

யார் என்று தெரியாது., எவர்

யார் என்று தெரியாது., எவர் என்று புரியாது !!! இவன் என்பான் அவன் !!! அவன் என்பான் இவன் !!!

First calling these players

First calling these players Tamil tigers is offensive. It is like calling any player from Muslim background Al Qaeda.

Roy dias is not Tamil, he is Chetti

Mathews is half burgher and half Sinhala.

Writers should know stuff before writing!

Mathews' dad is not Burgher

Mathews' dad is not Burgher pal, he is Tamil. Just like Russel Pushpakumar Arnold.

And yes the title is not well thought out. May be the writer tried to find some irony in the title.

All in all what this proves is 'talent' is what matters to get in to SL national colours. Not religion, not ethnicity, not nationality.

I too used to think so. but

I too used to think so. but in a recent newpaper article, it mentioned like that. (with names)

As Mathews is having an anglikan name it is difficult to find his ethnicity for the ones who look for it. Anyway who cares for the ethnicity!

The SLC should start to

The SLC should start to invest in training centers in the North and also they need to give them the chance to play on the SL A team. The talent search needs to happen !!
