Unorthodox Test openers

Sri Lanka was one of the first Test playing countries to open test innings with batsmen who attack from the start: Jayasuriya and Dilshan. Now, for every orthodox opener like Cook and Alviro Petersen, there's a Dilshan, Gayle, Sehwag, Tamim Iqbal. Does that mean there is nothing distinctive about Test batsmen, other than wanting to open.

Did Jayasuriya and Dilshan open the batting in first class cricket before they became Test match openers?

When Dilshan asked

When Dilshan asked Jayawardene to let him open, Jayawardene asked Dilshan to 1st try it out in the first class level, so yes Dilshan did play as an opener for Bloomfield before becoming a Test opener, but Jayasuriya didn't open the batting at first class level, though he did play as an opener in several ODIs before becoming a test opener.
