at cricketstas Guru; you

at cricketstas Guru; you can't compare players of other countries & ours. They have strong first class structure. Therefore they have enough players to replace any player at any time after giving few chances. But we don't have strong first class structure like Austrailia,England,SouthAfrica,NewZealand. Even Bangladesh have good first class structure rather than us. Most Players of those countries who play domestic cricket have the international quality even before representing their national team. They only have to do is go & perform. But need our players to give more opportunities in international level. There is a huge gap between our first class cricket & international level. Also if you compare players like Sanga,Mahela's records at their early career; our youngsters have a better record than them. Even sanga has told about this factor before. Other thing is we need to deal with what we have. These players are the best players that we have.

If you look at our new players who have best first class averages;

1.Anjelo Mathews - 54.33
2.Dinesh Chandimal - 52.22
3.Kusal Janith Perera - 49.57
4.Roshen Silva - 48.88
5.Koushal Silva - 47.53
6.Dimuth Karunarathna - 46.78
7.Kithruwan Vithange - 44.80
8.Rumesh Buddhika - 44.39
9.Udara Jayasundara - 42.91
10.Chathuranga de Silva - 42.60
11.Lahiru Thirimanne - 42.53
12.Anjelo Perera - 42.53
13.Asela Gunarathna - 42.17
14.Ashan Priyanjana - 40.62
15.Shehan Jayasuriya - 39.91
16.Upul Tharanga - 38.96
17.Madawa Warnapura - 37.64
18.Milinda Siriwardene - 36.90

cannot compare Tamim with

cannot compare Tamim with Dimuth and Kaushal. The guy has been playing since 2007... He SHOULD have an average better than Dimuth and Kaushal....

If Dimuth and Kaushal doesn't touch the 40s after same number of matches as Tamim, then they should be shown the door too.

BUT, they are still starting their careers, and they have exceeded expectations even over taking Warner and Rogers.(not to mention the Indians)

FYI: ECB is STILL getting blasted for dropping Compton. and u might notice they are YET to find an opener who is as good as Compton was partnering Cook. Latest to fail is Trott. :)

The openers musical chairs

I wasn't surprised the squad put forward by the author had two new openers (Thiri and Tharanga) and noted the stats put forward in support. The test opener for SL is merry go round of names with probably the exception of Sanath and Marvan, ironically neither were openers when they came in to the team. I would imagine Wettimuny was one of the genuine openers we have had. Mahanama comes to mind but even he didnt come in to the side as an opener - don't think he opened in first class cricket at the time.

Another important factor is what are SL openers faced with in the domestic circuit? From all accounts, a couple of overs of the new ball and then spin, so hardly a surprise that when faced with Steyn and Johnson with the new ball, the odds are stacked against openers.

My call is we stick with Kusal Silva who has shown some genuine grit and temperament (ironically not an opener by trade). Dimuth by virtue of his 150 against NZ also deserves a shot. I dont beleive there are magical openers hidding around with the exception of Tharanga. The plan should be to give these two a chance to settled down and some could argue both have already had that chance. Given the issue with openers in first class cricket in SL, I think we just need to be patient and stay with these two for a while.

Noted the argument that Tharange should never have been dropped after this last test series where he had success. Fair call but unfortunatley events have overtaken those circumstances so unless doemstic numbers stack up in his favor running up to the Pakistan test sqaud my call is to stick with Kaushal and Dimuth.

Already 6 batsmen are sure

Already 6 batsmen are sure for the test squad.

1.Koushal Silva
2.Dimuth Karunarathna
3.Kumar Sangakkara
4.Dinesh Chandimal
5.Lahiru Thirimanne
6.Anjelo Mathews

Normally 8 maximum number of batsmen are included into a 15 man squad. Therefore 2 batters have a chance. Last time for the NZ test series they included Prasanna Jayawardene & Niroshan Dickwella. I don't think Prasanna will be selected this time. But Dickwella has shown some character upto now. He scored 71 runs in his debut against SA. As i think he will be selected this time as well. Then other position will be grabbed mostly by one player from Upul Tharanga,Kusal Janith Perera,Kithruwan Vithanage. Also Roshen Silva has a slightly chance because of his first class average is 48.88. But i think selectors will pick Kusal Perera because he has already scored 3 centuries & one half century in this Pak A tour. Other thing is his first class average(49.57) is only second to the Anjelo Mathews & Dinesh Chandimal. Even Kithruwan & Roshen has a chance if they can get a big hundred in 3rd unofficial test against pakistan A. Because it will be added with Kithruwan's 351 which was the highest first class score by a player in one inning or Roshen Silva's overall record of 4th highest first class average of 48.88.

But now my 8 batters are;

1.Koushal Silva
2.Dimuth Karunarathna
3.Kumar Sangakkara
4.Dinesh Chandimal
5.Lahiru Thirimanne
6.Anjelo Mathews
7.Niroshan Dickwella
8.Kusal Janith Perera ; Ha Ha 5 wicket keepers in the squad.

From Bowlers i can pickup 3 bowlers at once. Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal, Tharindu Koushal. Rangana is our main test bowler. Suranga is the front runner from our test fast bowlers. Tharindu is a match winner. He takes 5+ wickets each & every time when he picks the ball.

There are so many options to select other 4 bowlers.

Spinners- 1.Dilruwan Perera
2.Malinda Pushpakumara
3.Also Seekuge Prasanna or Lakshan Sandakan has a slight chance only because of adding variety to the spin attack.

Fast Bowlers - 1.Dammika Prasad
2.Shaminda Eranga
3.Nuwan Pradeep
4.Chanaka Welagedera
5.Dushmantha Chameera
6.Lahiru Gamage
7.Vishwa Fernando
8.Binura Fernando
9.Kasun Madushanka

I think mostly it will be 3 spinners & 4 fast bowlers. I don't think they will pick 5 fast bowlers & 2 spinners. Because 5 fast bowlers are too much in srilankan conditions.4 spinners & 3 fast bowlers are not bad in home conditions. But considering future we need to give more chances to fast bowlers. Because most of the countries have fast bowling friendly conditions. Ex-Austrilia, NewZealand, South Africa, England, even India, UAE, WI as well. If you fail to groom fast bowlers you can't win away from home. Therefore combination will be 3 spinners & 4 fast bowlers.

from 3 spinners Rangana Herath & Tharindu Koushal are sure. Mostly other will be Malinda Pushpakumara because he is the highest wicket taker in last first class season & he is a left arm spinner & we need to fill the Herath's position in near future.

Therefore my 3 spinners are;

1.Rangana Herath
2.Tharindu Koushal
3.Malinda Pushpakumara

from fast bowlers my first 2 choices are Suranga Lakmal & Nuwan Pradeep. Because Suranga Lakmal is the best bowler from our test fast bowling squad. Nuwan Praddep was the highest wicket taker for Srilanka in last NZ test series. If we pick Lakmal & Pradeep you can't pick Eranga because he is a similar kind of bowler as them. Dammika Prasad is different from them .He hit the deck hard. Lahiru Gamage was the 3 rd highest wicket taker in last domestic season & he was the highest wicket taker from fast bowlers. But my 3rd choice is Dushmantha Chameera. He is the fastest bowler we have. He will be the match winner for us in future specially away from home. We need to give him more chances to groom. He is the bowler who can fill the avoid of Lasith Malinga at some day. My 4th choice is left armer to add variety to the fast bowling attack. We have 3 main laft armers. Chanka Welegedera,Vishwa Fernando,Binura Fernando.

I think new boy will be choosen. Binura wasn't selected to the SL-A test squad for the Pak-A series. Therefore Vishwa will be picked. Left armers are the new trend of the cricket.

Therefore 4 fast bowlers should be;

1.Suranga Lakmal
2.Nuwan Pradep
3.Dushmantha Chaneera
4.Vishwa Fernando

Therefore my final test squad is;

1.Koushal Silva
2.Dimuth Karunarathna
3.Kumar Sangakkara
4.Dinesh Chandimal
5.Lahiru Thirimanne
6.Anjelo Mathews
7.Niroshan Dickwella
8.Kusal Janith Perera

9.Rangana Herath
10.Tharindu Koushal
11.Malinda Pushpakumara

12.Suranga Lakmal
13.Nuwan Pradep
14.Dushmantha Chameera
15.Vishwa Fernando
