An umpire was killed when he was hit on the head by a ball during a cricket match.

The death of 72-year-old Alcwyn Jenkins was yesterday being treated as a freak accident.

Witnesses said a batsmen hit the ball to a boundary where a fielder threw it back to the wicket. But the grandfather failed to see it coming at speed and it hit him on the side of the head.

After desperate attempts to resuscitate him on the pitch, the father of two, from Skewen, Neath, was flown to hospital by air ambulance but died of the head injury.

Spectator Paul Llewellyn, 51, said: “It was a freak accident – no-one was to blame. The fielder threw the ball back to the wicket; it happens dozens of times in a game. But the umpire didn’t see it coming and of course they don’t wear protective headgear.

“I saw him lying on the pitch and no-one was sure what had happened to start with. The game was abandoned and we heard later that Mr Jenkins had died.”

Mr Jenkins, a widower, was umpiring a league one match between Swansea and Llangennech at Swansea’s seafront St Helen’s ground on Saturday when the accident happened at 4.45pm in front of an unusually large crowd.

Steve Davies, chairman of Swansea Cricket Club, said: “Just before the game he turned to me and said: ‘I just love playing games at St Helen’s. It’s a wonderful place to play cricket’.”

The umpire had recently enjoyed a tour of the West Indies with friends at South Wales Cricket Association.

Close friend Neil Hobbs, honorary chairman of the South Wales Cricket Association, said Mr Jenkins was one of its most popular figures, having been an umpire for more than 25 years.

He said: I’ve umpired with Alcwyn myself and he’s a great guy. He was well respected throughout the league and everybody knew Alcwyn.

“Everyone is stunned at this. Everybody in South Wales knows Alcwyn through cricket. It’s a very, very sad day and I feel sorry for his family.

“Alcwyn’s wife died some time ago and they had a boy and a girl and he has a number of grandchildren.

“It was one of the most freak accidents you could ever imagine on the cricket field. It’s never happened before as far as I know and God forbid it will never happen again.”

A message on the association’s website says: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic accidental death of umpire Alcwyn Jenkins from an injury sustained on the field of play at St Helen’s. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Eric Lewis, treasurer of Llangennech Cricket Club, said yesterday: “We were the fielding side and from what I understand they had been off for rain.

“They had only just gone back two or three minutes. Somebody had hit the ball and one of our boys threw it in as you do and Alcwyn was just in line and it hit him on the side of the head.”

A spokeswoman for Morriston Hospital said the injuries Mr Jenkins suffered were consistent with being hit on the head with a cricket ball.

South Wales Police confirmed there were “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding the death.

Officers are investigating exactly what happened as part of routine inquiries for Swansea Coroner Philip Rogers.

An inquest is due to be opened this week.

Such a shame. RIP Alcwyn

Such a shame. RIP Alcwyn Jenkins.

It's only a matter of time that a spectator gets hit too. There is just no protection when the ball is flying into the stands and kids are everywhere. Worrying..
