Depoliticisation of sports is the need of the hour

Today what we need is someone who has the backbone to repeal the outdated Sports Law and set up a new proposal where the Sports Minister is only the policy holder and not the person who implements the policy. Each sport should run on its own merit with a list of people specifically named as eligible

I know I am opening a can of warms but I like your opinion on this piece Hilal. Pathiravithana is reputed writer. Has he also taken to a ride by Arjuna and Hashan.?

//  “Politicians keep using cricket as a big-time tool. Just see Sanath Jayasuriya. Sure he is one of the greatest cricketers that Sri Lanka has ever produced but, he once used a political push for his own survival, and now he has to pay it back in style.

See how politics happens in Sri Lanka. http://www.dailymirror.lk/index.php/news/1067-actress-claims-fans-being-misled.html

Only artist endorsed Sarath Fonseka loses her role in teledrama. Those who have power can do anything. Artist and other who endorsed MR who currently has the power get everything. they endorse mainly to get benifits since he has the power. If UNP has power same thing happen.

Players while playing shouldn't endorse politicians. It's simple as that. If they do they can use influence. These things never happened in the past. I hope it will not happen in the future. If one player endorses General Fonseka it would be the end of his career I suppose. That is politics in Sri Lanka. What happens half of the team endorse one party and other half other party. It would be a real mess.

Bottom line don't try to take political assistance while playing. It's not good for SLC.

I like the text appeared below the pic in this article .

Not cricket! Not while wearing the good ‘ol blazer… old chappie!!!

Yes SquareCut, I firmly believe that while playing, cricketers should not be involved in politics, after retiring they have a perfect right to do so.See the case of Arjuna Ranatunga, his father was a minister in Chandrika's cabinet but he refrained from climbing on Chandrika's stage till after he retired. That is the ethical course of action,I don't know about basketball and other sports but in cricket a team must play together as 1 to be succesful, just imagine if one half of the team supports MR and one half supports SF,there will be a division in the team too.The team should belong to SRI LANKA as a country not to SLFP or UNP,all other political leaders refrained from dragging PROFESSIONAL cricketers into politics and I wish MR would have done the same.Imagine how uncomfortable some players in the team must be feeling when they know a few players have political backing,In no other CRICKET PLAYING COUNTRY has a cricketer stepped onto a political stage before,so sorry Hilal but I agree fully with Paranavitan,we cannot condone this irrespective of your political views

Believe me  it's not a question of SF supporters. We love our cricket. We want our cricket in right track. Whether it's SF, MR, Sangakkara I will tell what I see as wrong as wrong.

Sad to see the way legend like SJ acting.

Is he not entitled to have his own opinion or support who he wants to ?

Sujan you can't understand what is the problem is. Who said he can't.? Why don't he retire and do politics.? This is the first time this sort of thing happened. That's while playing supporting politicians.  Try to understand. That's where the problem is.  By supporting politician he can use influence.

He got help in 2006 too. Shame. Shame. shame.

I am happy Selection commite headed by De Mel now showing a back bone  and going in correct path.  Let's hope they will act the same way.

Tharunyayata hetak. Let's drive forward with youth. It's the need of the hour as far as SLC is concerned. Sanath flopped last few series. He is fading. Retire with dignity man.

ya sure he can have his own opinion but by expressing it at this juncture makes it hard for us to differentiate between Sanath Jayasuriya the active SL cricketer and Sanath Jayasuriya the person. As Sanath Jayasuriya the individual he does have that right but as Sanath Jayasuriya the ACTIVE cricketer it is not ethical to speak at political platforms,he is going BEYOND endorsing a candidate, he is CAMPAIGNING for a candidate which I believe is wrong.I personally hate all d politicians in SL,they are a dirty bunch.Do not misunderstand Sujan, we all love Sanath,
we don't want people saying things about him and his character, thats why we are against him campaigning for MR because he will be called a "Political selection" anytime he gets selected 4 d team even if he gets selected for good performance also it could lead to rifts in the team.Sanath is our national treasure we want to protect him from the Cesspit that is SL politics.

no point in arguing...they simply dont see the difference between supporting as a retired cricketer and as a player with a national contract...
