Decisive weekend in Sri Lanka Inter School Under-19 two day tournament

Reemus Fernando, Feb-19-2009 (The Island): It will be a decisive weekend for the teams who are placed at the breaking point in the points table in the on-going Inter School Under-19 two day tournament, as the matches over the weekend will decide whether they could earn valuable points to advance to the Limited overs tournament.

At the completion of all their tournament matches, Royal, Thurstan and Ananda occupy the first three spots in the points table in Group A. Since the first four placed teams in each group advance to the limited overs tournament, this weekend’s matches involving Maliyadeva and Dharmaraja will be of utmost importance for them to remain in contention for a place in the limited overs tournament. They are currently placed below fourth place.

Alarm bells are ringing for Zahira, who are currently placed last in their group and they will have to perform a miracle against Mahinda next week if they are to avoid being demoted.

In Group ‘B’, Trinity and Dharmasoka have almost secured their place in the limited overs tournament by topping the points table. And there is still a chance for Richmond, Revata, Holy Cross, St. Aloysius’, Maris Stella and Kingswood. Although there are a few more matches to be played in Group ‘B’, the fate of St. Anne’s has been already decided as they have completed their matches and are placed at the bottom of the points table.

St. Sebastian’s have unseated St. Joseph’s to settle on top of the points table in Group ‘C’. Both teams have completed their matches and are set to enter the next stage. The teams vying for the rest of the two places in Group ‘C’ are Moratu Vidyalaya, D. S. Senanayake College, St. Benedict’s and De Mazenod College. St. Sylvester’s College and President’s College are ranked seventh and eighth and would be fighting to retain their place in the Division I tournament for next year.

Very few matches remain in Group ‘D’. Nalanda top the table with a match to go, while Isipatana (matches completed) and Dharmapala (one to go) are placed second and third. Prince of Wales and S. Thomas’ have one match each remaining in the tournament and are in the range of 70-80 points. Meanwhile, St. Peter’s, who have completed all their matches are currently placed fourth, but should not be surprised if the Cambrians overtake them.

The top four teams of each group and the two teams accumulating the highest number of points from the rest of the four groups will advance to the limited overs tournament.
