June 3, 2011 (Island Cricket): Veteran Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya said that he is eyeing a comeback and hopes to be selected for the upcoming ODI series against England.

"I was disappointed when I was not picked for the World Cup. I have been part of the team and also in the [30-man preliminary World Cup] squad and when I missed it, I felt very disappointed," Jayasuriya told Gulf News in an interview.

"Our chief selector Aravinda De Silva said that he picked the best 15 players for the World Cup, which I don't think was the best. However, I don't want to comment on that much."

The 41-year-old, who has 444 ODIs under his belt, made his debut in 1989 and is now also a member of parliament. He last played an ODI for Sri Lanka in 2009, but appeared to be nowhere close to contemplating retirement.

"I hope to be selected for the England one-day series. I have been playing in the provincial series and have played well and got most runs in the domestic season," Jayasuriya said.

"If I get a chance I will give my best again for my country or I will continue with my preparations for the coming Sri Lankan Premier League (SPL) in July, which is going to be a big and interesting tournament."

The ODI series between England and Sri Lanka gets underway with the first ODI at the Kennington Oval in London on June 28.

damn... i seriously can't understand why people just keep saying it's good to give him chance... :/ he's had more than enough chances... 444 matches!! he should've retired with dignity.. it's the time of the younger generation!!! and not yours Mr MP! so back off and let those kiddos groom in to good cricketers...if not, you'll just drag down SL cricket...

if anyone read this comment happen to know sana please convey the message.

I would still love to see him come and play, nothing wrong with being old as long as he is fit and can perform like HE USED TO BE. if he is going to score 40-60 runs at 90% strike rate or if he fails this time please ask him to announce his retirement and walk away. he is probably the only man I would like to see everyday but its' a heatache for us that he still wants to play at international level and keep failling. And I see his love for the game and he can continue playing at domestic level, eng cunties, IPL, SPL or what ever he like. Dont think that he is in for the money as he can get more with counties or 20/20 around the world.

He is the last of the 1996 squad I think. Its really time to let go now, vaas is dominating first class cricket, dharmasena umpires, attapatu and aravinda went into the SLC and Murali has also retired. He is still trying to hold on to the spot just wasting up another space. He should be remembered as a legend not an old player clinging on forever.

Who cares when he will retire or how old he is? Can anyone hit the ball better than him in Sri Lanka? He had the record for most sixes in ODI cricket!! We need him!

According to Dr.Mendis the issue with Tharanga should not have even been released as apparently ICC only makes it official after the tribunal.

The timing of the release seems odd that it should come a couple of weeks before the ODIs are to start.

Wonder whether sana had anything to do with getting the news leaked so he could step in. Besides the whole point of the new administration and change to the team was to bring young guys in and gear them up to take Sri lankan cricket forward so i don't know how sana fits into that unless he has plans of playing WC 2015!!
